Has anyone here had problems with Red Mica paint fading, mine seems to have faded on the rear half of the drivers rear door.Just wondering if it's a common problem. Car is a '01 UK WRX.

Mines an MY02 , and i`ve had no problems with it fading. Sometimes depending on the way you look at it and the sky conditions (clear blue) it can look very faded. And mine is left out all the time. But this is mainly due to the light conditions at the time. Hope this helps

Red paint always fades more than other colours due to the amount of pigment which needs to be used (I think). Usually more evident where heat is involved such as bonnets, or if constantly exposed to sunlight (unlikely in the UK ). Is there a gap in a fence or something which exposes that part of the door more than the rest of the car (clutching at straws). Such a shame, the bugeye always looked superb in red mica. I'd have considered it if the blobeye was available in it instead of boring old flat red.

 

Haven't noticed any fading on my X reg classic shape red mica scoob. I would have thought modern clearcoat paints are less prone to fading anyway.

My red F reg E30 beamer was quite badly faded when I sold it for the scooby

 

No such problems on my MY2000 mica red classic. Just the pleasure of a fairly rare colour, and the pain of mates saying its pink!

No fading probs, ( MY00 classic ) but it seems to stonechip too easily....anyone else, or just me? How regularly are you polishing it?
Edited to say that, unless you know otherwise, it may have had a localised repair at some point in its past.....sometimes shows itself in the manner you've described.

 

Same here si , Mica red Bug. I personally think they are all jealous of not having a really nice coloured car. Personnally i think it`s more of a light burgandy.

 

no mate, i have the same probs too. i believe it's down to the fact subaru put on just enough paint to cover the panels and not a drop more tight buggers.

 

Also agree with the stone chip problem.
Fading prob doesn't look like localised repair (though i'm no expert) as only half the door has faded.Problem is do i try to get it resprayed or not as i've read that the paint can be a slightly darker shade if resprayed so i'll still be in the same boat and to be honest it isn't that noticable to most ,just that i know it's there,and as barmyclown said it's only noticable in certain light and when looking straight at it.
So ultimate solution would be to get the whole car done ,but i think this would be a little OTT.
Probable wait 'til the stone chips get worse then get it all done.

I have found with my jdm wrx v7 in red mica that a little red colour magic type polish works wonders on the fine scratches and small chips.I then go back over it with a little zymol

 

Ive got a red mica classic and i too have the stone chip problem. spent some time on the old girl last week to cover them up as best as possible. paint is ok though.

I did red somewhere on an official report on classic scoobies, that the paint was aways thin on the bonnet. tight gits!!!

...I was told if you have to respray any shades of red it is difficult to get a perfect match?
keep a mica red Scooby highly polished and she looks amazing. In cloudy conditions it's a darker shade of red and when the skies are blue she looks like a flaming torch charging through Cambridgeshire.
A mica red Scooby is like watching the sun set....it's constantly changing its shade according to the weather.

I always get loads of positive comments on the colour of the car.

PS I think we've all forgotten to mention, it IS the fastest colour, forget your blue, silver or green variants! Scientific proof above - they're lighter due to less paint!

 

Your eyesight must be failing. Red mica is a really deep red, some would say burgundy, colour. The metallic flecking in the paint causes it to change colour a bit according to the light conditions, but not that much. It's at completly the opposite end of the red spectrum to pink

...and it IS the best colour for a Scoob
