Default Buying a sti5 type R. Advice please

As above. i am looking to upgrade from my 96 wrx to a 98 sti5 type R, what should I look out for when viewing. what would be the best mods other than zorst and intake? what sort of gains would it give. Any help and advice would be great.
Cheers M.T..

Make sure you take it for a good test drive before you buy. The diff system may/may not be to your liking.

I personally wouldn't start modding any high powered Impreza unless it's something like brakes or exhausts.

Get one with as much history as you can, and get it checked by an engineer.

my advice would be to have a look in type r corner, there are loads and loads of them in there with all the mods so that should point you in the right direction, everyone there can answer any worries that you have.

my sequence was knocklink, dump valve, decat exhaust, suspension. i think brakes, FMIC, would be next.

good luck.

i upgraded from a 95 WRX to a Type R version 5 and the power increase is breathtaking.

Only mods this one has is the Full decat exhaust from Scoobysport.

I found the rear wheels tend to spin far more when overtaking than the WRX, so prepare yourself for a handfull of fun.

Great car mate youll love it when you get one.

Thanks for the advice Chaps.. Is the Ecutek The best for slight mods eg intake and zorst? would it be better mapped to 97/98Ron or 98 + booster? what other ECU`s should I be looking at?

Thanks M.T

My STI Version 5 Type R (MY99) will be up for sale in the coming weeks , if you are looking for a straight, sensibly modded and loved example.

Full details will follow but basically a 25K Miles, solid example.

Brought in directly through my good friend Miguel at Newera Imports 2 yrs ago. Looked after religously by me since. Only sensible mods undertaken.
Genuine Dyno'd 317bhp / 259@wheels - 310lbft. (Sub 13s Quarter Mile)

Extremely reluctant sale. A Good enthusiasts home wanted

looking to get sti soon... have had some brilliant advice from peccy!

SUBARU IMPREZA WRX STI TYPE RA V-LIMITED MY99 SONIC BLUE 4 DOOR

my father is not too keen on 2 doors so this is the next best thing - some of the guys tell me that this machine hammers p1's & 22bs! they are around £12-£14k

i've seen some similar to the above but with 555 next to them - what's that all about?

there is no hammering of p1s and 22bs.

at 276bhp they are all pretty similar in terms of performance, only differences are gearing which is advantageous depending on which roads youj are on, and the torque distribution means that some cant take full advantage oof the car in situations where others could.

In a straight line you would be hard pushed to tell between different models of the same power.

276bhp (280ps) is the most the jap boys can claim.....the v4-6 are actually 294bhp(300ps) in standard form. A jap 22b is rumoured to be well over 300bhp...dunno how true this is. after speaking to a number of ppl, a type r IS quicker than a p1, accleration wise.

il looking to get a type r in the next few weeks. Compared a 'uk wrx' scooby it is the dogs!!! Lowly geared for max acceleration.

best to get ECU remapped though, as putting octane booster in all the time, gonna be a bit of a pain.

Speaking as somebody who has actually owned a P1 and an sti5typeR, not just owned one of them, I can safely say that there's not much difference between the two cars at all. The grey has shorter gears, all well and good, but it also requires more changing of gears and it a proper pain in the **** economy wise on long trips, or on any stretch of motorway. And all classic imprezas rolled off the production line with 276 bhp as a maximum IMHO.
