I was very disappointed?

The grip in todays wet weather was fantastic no doubt about that but its outright pace was not that great! Yes it was only a std 99 plate 2000 AWD but I was expecting more? from 60-100 it did not feel any quicker that my civic type r! And the brakes were dreadfull! for a car with that performance it was just a joke, so bad infact im starting to think maybe it was running red stuff pads or simalar?

Yes its a very quick car but not quick enogh in std form for me to sell my civic!

Help I really want a scoob will I notice much difference in performance if I try a modded car? But then im only 21 so insurance is the big issue!
As I say I really want one but not one like that!

From 60-100 it probably isn't any faster! but as you say traction was excellent, try one with either PPP, or a tec2/3, and see the difference then.

there's bugger all difference in performance between the two cars with an average capability driver on normal roads.
different styles of driving yes, but ultimately they're about as fast as one another.
civic is a great car and to be honest unless you've got the cash to upgrade the scooby (and cover the insurance) don't bother.
by the way i drive a uk MY99 and you're right, the brakes are crap! saying that they're a massive difference to the 2 pots on earlier cars, they were scary bad!

 

try a jap import theve abit more grunt as standard.

 

What you are saying is essentially correct as you are comparing to car with similar performance, infact something even quicker 60-100.

If you can get a good quote with L&V or another insurance co that allows mods, then full decat and Tek 2 is the way forward (under a grand if you scout the 2nd hand market). 60-80 in 3rd gear gives you whiplash and 4 gear feels like the old 3rd - it's the way imports are by default...

Edited to add that the brakes are not that bad - the std 4-pots with a decent set of pads does know how to stop, and this was the opinion of someone who drove my car and himself owns a Supra with a brake upgrade. Mind you I was running some top-notch Tarox pads at that time

Yeah Tek 2/3 are ecu upgrades. Made by a company called Ecutek.
With full decat and Tek2 you should be increasing bhp from 215 to about 260ish.
Huge increase in torque too, turbo spools up much earlier, changes the drive of the car completely.

260-270bhp ish but someone will say 500 the turbo on the UK cant flow much more than 280bhp.

 

Yes, it is an ECU upgrade.

Dynos suggest anything from 250 to 280 bhp (Guy I bought my Tek 2 from had 281bhp on the rollers, with quality filter and HKS system)

 

99 scoob 0-60 5.5, 0-100 14.5, so 60-100 9 seconds
ctr 6.8 and 16.8 so 10 seconds 60-100

so yes I am not suprised they were close

 

How much will the insurance co rape me for the decat and ECU? Do you need to uprate the brakes and clutch for the extra power?

 

268bhp and 268lb/ft torque.
Tek2 ecu, De-cat and Induction.
And I ran a 13.8 1/4 mile at santa pod mate. Nothing wrong with uk cars, money saved on insurance goes well on mods!!

Definitely a better option than an import at 21! Still, it's worth remembering how quick a CTR is from 60-100! Not slow by any stretch!!

Edited to say insurance isn't too bad (tesco) as long as you tell them the car is less than a 10% increase. Don't mention the ecu as it is too difficult for them to check anyway!! (Unless you have stickers etc on it!!) Also, Clutch is fine with extra power, and better brakes are always a good option, but all you need for that is really discs and pads unless you plan on really giving them a hard time!!

From what ive read a tek2/ppp should improve 0-100 to abt 13.5seconds.

 

There is a lot of potential for modifying a Scooby though, but they are not quick in standard form, especially compared with a CTR.

My MY00 was about 9 seconds for 60-100, now it is about half that.

This may or may not be relevant depending on your future plans.

 

My standard MY97 got a 13.7 1/4 mile.

Would have thought others with teks's etc would be running better times.

mates got a 250bhp uk classic, with a good clutch and flywheel and can do 13.2 now with a good launch

torque was quite low as well on his dyno runs

who cares if its only 150bhp if it puts down good times like that, mine was pushing out quite a bit of extra power and torque over that and his car is starting to get near my 1/4mile times due to things like a much better clutch and flywheel etc etc

I would also consider an import, cheaper to buy, more grunt, so save cash towards insurance also a better starting point for furture mods, me and a few mates have got scooby's/evo's all similar age to you, insurance wise Tesco seem the best by along way even on imports/young drivers etc etc, but make sure you budget for cat1 & tracker...

I pay about £1600 on STi 555, 5 yrs ncb clean license....
Mate pays about £1200 on STi Type R, NCB but with few points, worth every penny.

Like the other guys suggest, try driving a few different models.. sure you will find something that will impress you.

 

Insurance-wise...Liverpool and Victoria allow any number of mods for free!

Norwich Union allow 3 mods for free...

 

L&V wont insure under 25's on impreza's, under 30 on JDM cars.
Tesco or the likes are your best bet.

I test drove a civic type r last week(own a MY99/00) and I was very disappointed in the civic. I like the look of it but the steering was awful and you sit too high. Went to overtake a car and didnt have the same confidence as I do with turbo.Also the vtec
kick wasn't as exciting as my previous integra.
Its the second time I,ve driven one and I still prefer the scoob.

 

I test drove a Type-R few months ago too. Steering was like a go kart, really stiff. Still undecided if i liked that or not! Gear lever wasnt as awkward as i thought itd be though. Was fairly nippy and handled well but ultimatly didnt feel special enough. And scoobs make me go all gooey when i look at em!!!

 

I have an MY99 that until recently had a full decat, tek 2.5, dawes to control the boost and an STI V intercooler (doesn't make much difference). It would have been about 275bhp and the mods were effectively free because I sold them for pretty much what I paid for them. I met up with a local CTR lad who had a magnex zorst and an induction kit. The scooby was noticeably quicker in a straight line and the mods on my car meant there was great pull from 2500-7000 rpm which gave me a massive powerband. I love the CTR but an MY99/00 appropriately modified takes it to a new level

With those mods and a crap clutch on a warm day (bad for turbo's) my car did the 1/4m in 13.401 @ 103mph. On colds days when she was really flying it was good for 100mph in around 12.5s which I think you have to agree is fast.

 

13.8 was without the ECU on my car. It was also done on the hottest day of the year so I thought it was pretty good!!
Insurance was £30 more with a 10% increase.
Should be pretty reliable with this set-up as well. Although obviously it is never going to be perfect as it increases stress loads on engine parts etc.

 

My car is standard again and the engine still runs fine

 

Try a Jap STi V3.
Even at 1 bar you will have a huge grin.
