Can any one help, just purchased MY96 Turbo from main dealer. Car cuts out at 5000 RPM and somtimes 3500. when revs drop it starts again with a jolt. Dealer says this is normal for the impreza & it is the turbo cut out coming in due to the turbo pressure being too high. They have told me not to accelerate too hard and theres nothing they can do. Any ideas how to solve this?

 

i've got an sti5, and just started having the same problem when accelarating hard in 4/5th gear,
it cuts out around 6000 revs but will happily go to 8000 in 1/2/3
anyone got the answer

 

Take car back, get a refund, find a better dealer/car

Probably nothing serious (sounds like overboost which is likely oily solenoid/hosing). Of more concern is a main dealer selling a car in this condition - seriously, give 'em sh*t!

I think that UK cars cut at 15.5PSI. Basically the fuel cut-out comes into play and you have the well known "Brickwall effect" engine cut.

I'm sure that all they have to do is adjust the wastegate to open at a lower preset. One of the early mods I did was to mess around with the pre-tension on the wastegate arm and adjust the screw until it cut out on hard acceleration (under load)and then wind it back until cut out didn't occurr.

Unless the wastegate is wound completely back then they are speaking complete load of tosh.

Thanks everyone I'll try your ideas. took it back to dealer & service engineer test drove it & said it was the fuel cut off due to turbo pressure reaching limit & this was normal. Let you know if wastegate adjustment fixes it

I have a UK 96 model and it doesn't cut out until you get to about 7,000rpm under any circumstances, foot to floor etc.

I would take it back again and let them sort it, for the money you probably spent it is well out of order you having to get your hands dirty this soon after pruchase!

Also try using 'overboost' or 'wastegate solenoid 'as your search word.

This is a very common fault and any half decent dealer should be able to fix it no probs sounds like you need to go to another dealer

It is definitly not normal.
