Cool

Jim thanks for the reply , the oil is whatever the main dealer has put in it , but to be fair it sounds a bit of a deeper noise than tappets.
Scoobyslut sounds like I'll give it a try at the weekend ,I rather hope it is the tensioner rather than piston slap ...it's booked in to the dealers Friday week for their opinion , but any input is more than welcome

Dave

Question

My MY99 turbo with 32,000 on the clock has developed the dreaded knocking from the engine when cold , it only lasts about 5 mins max and is most noticable as you pull away /rev the engine slightly.I have listenend to the sound file on here on an old thread (piston slap) an mine sounds just the same , but I've also read on here that MY99's don't suffer with piston slap and that it could be the cam belt tensioner (tensioner was supposed to have been replaced back in Feb when the cam belt was changed )Any ideas out there for me ? Anyone had this before ? or had it sorted ?

Thanks in advance
Dave

What oil?
My new WRX03 had similar noises and I tried a change from Motul 300V to Castrol RS10W60.
Finally the tappets are less noisy now!

I suggest that it could well be the cam belt tensioner, have seen and heard of many cases of this.
I suggest you get someone else to start the engine, whilst you stand at the front with the bonnet open, so you can then hear where the noise is loudest. If it is the tensioner, you will hear it most from the side nearest the battery carrier and the tensioner is on the nearside front of the block.

Dave,
You will find the tensioner makes more of a "hard mettallic" knock, whereas if piston, its a bit lighter in tone and sounds normally, more from the back of the engine.
regards.
Steve.

Should be.

I'm surprised about the slap on a MY99.

Cheers,

George.

Unhappy

The piston slap problem seen (or heard!) on 97/98 engines was corrected on the phase 2 engines, although for many reasons slap can occur on any engine. Slap on a 99my would indicate something untoward going on inside.
