my psu fan has started making a loud buzzing noise, is it about to make my pc explode or what? sometimes if i give the side of the case a slap it stops but then later starts again.

if i need a new one how much am i looking at? dont want anything fancy

You sure it's not the CPU fan, these tend to have a life of only about 2-3 years and fail more common than PSU fans.

Have a look in RS/CPC etc, wouldn't expect to pay much more than a tenner.

its defo the psu. as thats where the noise is from and can feel it vibrating when its making the noise, as it doesnt when its not.

Have you tried oiling it? You should be able to either take the power supply apart, or get to the fan(s) from the outside. You should be able to peel back a sticky cover (or plastic cap) from the middle of the fan spindle. Apply some lubricant there and see if it goes away.

like wd40 or somat yeah? i'l give it a go tonight then. i clean it out with compressed air quite regulally so dont think its dust related or owt like that..

Yeah, I hadn't thought of that, we do that all the time here

Use 3 in 1, WD40 will work short term, but dries up really quick

Ir may well be dried out due to the heat that passes through. If something like WD40 does work, see if you can get hold of some better oil for it.

thankee dunno why i dint think of that realy as it seems to be grinding as it goes round or something. will pop down shops later n get some wd40 n give it a whiel tonight

If that dont work, go to maplins or space computers in manchester, they have decent 350 - 450V PSU's from around 15 quid

I had the same trouble a few months ago....

I got a new fan from PCWorld - it was a direct swap and was only £5.
