It's a 1993 WRX that is holding back .It's an intermitent fault one minute it is fine and flying the next, its hesitating then it could be fine again ,then it will be like driving a non turbo. so far we have fitted New Coils/Plugs/K&N Air Filter/fuel Filter/Lambda Sensor/Temp Sensor(under inlet manifold)We have also changed the ECU/Air Flow Meter/Actuater/Boost Control Valve and fitted a D-Cat front pipe and Centre Pipe. There is no pattern to it at all when really bad turbo gauge only reads 4 bar instead of 8 bar, any help wolud be appreciated as this car is DRIVING us mad.

Thanks...

Do you have any codes in the ECU, have you tried an ECU reset?

4 bar instead of 8 bar
Hope you mean 0.4bar and 0.8bar..

Boost control solenoid is sticking.. contaminated with oil..
clean it with brake cleaner.. when shut the natual boost is 0.4bar..

Check the wastgate linkage under the turbo heatshield.

Myself and a few others have had the circlip that retains the actuater arm to the wastegate come off so that the actuator is operating intermittently as it catches on the loose linkage.

My MY93 did this. I changed the plugs, which helped a bit, I changed the coils, which improved things slightly, I changed the boost controller, which improved things a bit more and finally fitted a Scoobyecu which appears to have cured it completely.

Not sure why the Scoobyecu would have made the difference but that worked on mine.

Where are you based? If you're in or around the north-west, I'm happy to swap ECU's and see if it helps.

EDIT: ah, you're in Kent. Bit far then
