I need a simple answer!
My STi V3(MY1997) is bog standard (does anyone use that phrase anymore?), has a full decat and a Blitz boost controller @ 1.25 bar = 314 dyno bhp.It has a huge BRD top mount IC just fitted.
Great, runs realy well, and is very drivable (it is a road/hillclimb car)
Looking through the Training WRX tuning manual (from MRT)there is talk of a better turbo that will work with the stock ecu, the VF23.(ref page 83) If I changed my STi unit to a VF23, added bigger injectors, KEPT the stock ecu and ran 1.25 bar will it work?
- What gains in torque / bhp
- What increase in lagg
- What size injectors
- Roughly what cost(where do you get a VF23 from in the UK?)
- Does anyone in the UK do a VF23 'equivelent'that bolts on?

Or is this madness?
The Aussies seem to really know the Scooby, so have a lot of confidence in them.

If your STI 3 is like all the others I have seen, or know about, including my own 3 VLimited, then you should have a VF23 fitted as standard. You probably already have the turbo on the car!

Most 22B's had VF23's to.

Moray, you'r kidding! Where does it show that on the turbo housing? I do not doubt you, but would like to check. Apart from feeling a prat now, where do I go from here to raise the engine's output to the next level? ( my target is a sound 350 bhp and 310 ish lb ft.)
A friends RA V3 gives 348bhp with a stock engine, FMIC and Gems.Can I get more with the above?

911, are your dyno sheets posted? and do you know what it was producing before any of the mods were carried out?

If you are using it for hillclimb, I would be a bit reluctant to fit a front mount intercooler. It can take away the sharpness of the throttle response, this can make the car a bit more dificult to balance on the throttle exiting a bend for example.
A better option would be ice packing your top mount or C02 chilling it before a run.
Another option would be to run a water injection system but run methanol in it and spray it prior to the intercooler. This spray can be run through the engine on fast idle as you approach the startline, the expansion of the methanol chills the intercooler and inlet manifold, this allows more boost/timing advance (read power) for a short period and is ideal for 1/4 mile/sprints/hills.
A TD05 turbo with a front entry mod would be capable of 350 bhp with no more lag (possibly less) than your current vf turbo.

..... you can still have a sharp response from the Throttle using a FMIC, but only if you are using ANTI-LAG ....

Andy, there is a whole "myth" around anti lag and VF turbos. Group N cars have to use VF turbos, since they are the ones homologated, and sure you can tune and run very aggressive anti lag and destroy not only VF turbos, but TD turbos too. But that is why you control the retard, amount of xtra air and additional fuel enrichment ..... if you can afford to throw away turbos then you can run a very aggressive antilag, but if you are on a tight budget you can run a very mild antilag.
A while ago, I posted about a simple mechanical device to control the aggressiveness of anti lag ..... BTW a private rally team running a STi ver 3/4 group N car uses 2 VF turbos per season, and each season is made of 7 national events. And the new IHI VF35 which is not roller/ball bearing seems to be lasting more than the older VF turbos (BTW TD turbos are only homologated for STi ver 1 and 2).

My VF23 has survived several seasons of ALS, the problem is that the noise scrutineers don't like it (although the crowd do) and if you reduce the retard, fuel and spark cut to limit the noise it doesn't work.

 

Shock horror! Fairly lightly tuned car makes 346bhp! On a standard issue IHI VF23! Way back in late 1999! Without a TD05 front entry turbocharger from "front entry TD05's-R-Me"!

Sorry to highjack your thread!

After making 347bhp at G-force recently my VF23 turbo has reached it’s limit it seems. Increasing the boost from 1.2bar did not produce more power.

New rods/pistons and injectors would allow me to take the engine further but with what turbo? Lag must be avoided at all cost but I want 400bhp – options that have been suggested are: VF34, APS or TD05/06 20G

Any thoughts/comments and recommendations gratefully received.

JackO, Bob hasn't! I got it wrong as I bought the TMIC off the 'Carman' here who has fitted a FMIC.....and it has no name on it.
