I've got an STI 8 and have been looking around for an ECU upgrade.
Scoobysport do a remap, but recomend full decat exhaust as well, for around 1300 quid all up. (341 bhp and mental tourqe)
Superchips do an add on for 511 quid. (300bhp plus improved tourqe)
PPP is too pricey. (300bhp plus similar tourqe to superchips)
I am leaning towards the superchip option, but wondered if anyone else had gone this way?
Everyone talks of PPP & scoobysport,but superchips do not come up very often.
Any info?

"Allegedly" the Superchip overrides what your ECU has set as a safe limit for boost. So, yes better performance through increased boost but bye-bye warranty and hello potential for something under the bonnet to 'let go.'

You pays your money and takes your choice.

Dont have on a Scoob - but have on an Audi - raises the boost and fuelling within safe parameter limits

Have had no probs in last 40k miles and mostly on ordinary unleaded

For the best power - probably best to have it properly mapped - i.e. Link replacement ECU

 

Scooby L - Looking at the same thing but I have just bought a New Blitz Nur Spec Exhaust for My STI but where did you get the figures on the scoobysport 341bhp ECU? as I can't see them on their website....or am I being Think(wouldn't be the first time)

 

E-mailed and spoke to Scoobysport direct.
£700 for re-mapped STI MY03 on it's own if you have de-catted exhaust already.

 

So just as a recap:

Do not go for superchip mod because it uses boost upgrade & more fuelling to get more power.
I may be being stupid but isn't that what a ususal re-map does?
It fools the ecu into accepting more boost from the turbo and increases the fuel to air ratio into the engine improving power & tourqe
And as prodrive have accepted 300bhp as an acceptable power increase (to maintain the warranty) why not superchip?
Also an extended warranty is offered by superchip to cover and damage resulting in their modification.
Any remarks?

 

Many years ago superchips did an 'upgrade' which was basically a bleed valve and a fuel cut defender. This was for the classics and basically timing and fuelling was unchanged but boost was raised. This was very crude and as such their reputation throughout the scooby community tarnished.

What they are up to now I haven't the foggiest, all I will say that if I had a scoob with the flash type ECU, there are a vast No. of tuning companies I'd goto before superchips, prices accounted for too.

You missed read it,he never mentioned fuel as well.

As far as I can see from reading historical posts the boost is upped but not the fueling or ignition.

I think I understand........

On a proper re-map all the factors: fuel, timing & boost, are increased.
But the superchip mod only increases the boost.
The sales man did mention an additional valve as well as the chip.
From this we may assume they are still following the classic shape upgrade.

TBH I'd go to a place local to you that has a good reputation with the ECUtek software.

Those that seem popular on here are Scoobysport, Power Engineering, BRD and John Banks.

Yes you are paying £750 but compared to £500 for a bleed valve and FCD that I could knock up from Maplins for £15, I'd know what I'd do to an STI8

What I meant was I have a Scoob but dont have a Superchip on it (Not dont go for it on a Scoob!!!!) I also have an Audi Turbo that has been Superchipped with impressive results for me - I could notice the difference straight away!

The Superchip raises the boost and the fuelling - probably not much of a power difference at the top end - but you'll get to the top end much quicker

By Comparison I also fitted a bleed valve once to a Cossie, initially which just raises the boost only and is fairly dangerous - caused all sorts of mis-fires so got rid of it

As a quick comparison on the Audi

0-60 timed before superchip = 8.0 secs tops
0-60 times after superchip = 6.2 secs - thats with a full tank and a passenger - doing the timing over a lot of runs

The difference is noticable

Why not opt for the Ecutek??

 

I like the idea of the Ecutek, but the man at scoobtsport recommended a total de-cat exhaust.
He said by increasing the car by that much power you need to get rid of the gases more efficiently, or something may go bang.

If I had 1300 squid burning a hole in my pocket I would deffo go for the ecutek over the PPP, as I do not have a UK warranty.

Time to start saving I fear!

 

Remember to uprate the fuel pump before you install whatever you choose. If you buy a whole package from Scoobysport, they (and any competent tuner like those mentioned above) will advise you of this anyway .Because with the Prodrive mod, apart from being well tested, your Subaru warranty will remain intact - if you Superchip your car, it will not. Having said that, any non-Prodrive mod will invalidate your warranty (officially) as well but I would be happy in going for an exhaust plus an EcuTek based re-map from any of the above mentioned mappers. An integrated re-map has always got to be better than a bolt-on mod!!!!I wouldn't personally want to test this claim though, would you? And, you will probably have the argument about what does and does not constitute "damage resulting"!!

Just all IMHO!

P.S. for £200 over the Superchips, I'd go for a full re-map every time!!!
