I had to pull over this morning as a fog resistant white van needed to get past.

Funny how some cars are so much better in fog than others.

 

Was surprising how many poeple in cars didn't have any lights on.

 

Funny how some people feel they need to make a point and hold others up. Who decides whats a safe speed to do in fog, I'm sure someone somewhere could have thought you were going too fast- who made you the judge of what speed everyone else should do?- the van driver was probably thinking why doesn't that a55hole in the scoob move over a bit quikcer if he doesn't want to go any faster.

 

Vans and lorries are usually quicker in fog, particularly at night as the driver looks down on to the beam of light from headlights and thus gets less glare back in huis face. In a lower car you are more in line with the lights and just see the reflected light. Generally thats why foglights are set low on the car too.

 

i was overtaking a lorry and he was up my rrrse. i pulled over as quick as possible.

Should i remind people of the serious accidents that drivers cause in this act of nature?

It also doesnt really matter how high up you are, the fact is, that little bit more they think they can see is offset by the length of time it takes to stop (ie it still takes longer to stop than that of a car) and so they still kill people [img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img] and i however, would not like to be the fireman/policeman/paramedic that has to scrape the remains off the road due to some plonka driving too fast

Nah, let them go as fast as they like, leaves more room on the road for the safe drivers, but remember that white vans are always faster than anything else on the road, thats why our ambulances are white!! Lol

just remember the M42 in 1996 big big smash in the fog it was closed for about 3 days to recover cars, wagons and to repair the motoway

that will slow u down

Like I said, another 60 spaces on the road for the rest of us, how many of them drive along at 80 plus thinking "there wont be anything stationary in the third lane" Twonkers! Fear would make me slow down if I couldn't see?

 

we don't know what the conditions were. what the speeds were or anything.I was just observing that some self righteous person who thinks someone elses speed is to fast or to slow contributes to the lack of safety on our roads.

 

How can having an opinion on someone elses speed possibly contribute to the lack of road safety? In my opinion you are on class A drugs. I hope that doesn't cause any road accidents today.

see my second posting. i wasn't "policing" anyones speed, just trying to make safe progress past a lorry.

 

No I value your opinion too Chiark you are amongst the few good mods here- I was just responding glibly to comments made by other people.

Its a fact that a lot of people tend to focus on other peoples driving- they shouldnt have done that/been driving at that speed etc. Rather than on themselves- the one aspect of driving behaviour we can all control. The attitude- they were in the wrong is probably the greatest cause of accidents and I detected that tone in the post.

a little tip for you
You stated "Who decides whats a safe speed to do in fog", simple, the person driving BUT, if mr a is doing 90 into thick fog and your doing 50, the traffic is slowing and mr a is still doing 90 when he impacts the back of the traffic queue thats doing 50, causing a multiple pile up, then you slow down and stop before the accident, a mr b then comes along at 80mph in his big van and ploughs into the back of you (probably killing you) i think id like to say "he/she is going a little quick for the conditions, dont you?
Remember that you are also on the road and you also rely upon other people and their judgement for speeds in serious conditions, i for one wouldnt like some chopper to come flying up at 90mph in thick fog, see them slam their brakes on then you let them past, see them dissapear into the distance and become a very potential hazzard to all the traffic out there.....

Tony's opinion here is probably a little more valid than the rest of us as they have a lot more fog 'oop north' than we do, when it isn't raining of course!

 

Three golden rules in fog:

Drive at a speed appropriate to the visibilty, just because it's misty doesn't mean visibilty is reduced.

If someone wants to go faster than you, you have no right to hold them up, nor they you in other circumstances, not just in fog.

Rear fogs are there to indicate to people behind who can't otherwise see you, that you are there. However once they are within adequate visual range (i.e. You can see them clearly) they can mask/be confused with brake lights and should be turned off.
