Hello.

I have recently pursuaded my lovely wife (what a suck up!!) to let me spend my hard earned cash on a Impreza Turbo.

Keen to get moving before she changes her mind I have visited www.autotrader.co.uk to have a look and see what you can pick up for £7-8k.

There are plenty 2.0 Turbo WRXs on there (although 90% of them are silver) and on paper some of them look like good buys. However, being new to this I'm not sure what my best purchase would be. I know what I like the look of (the STi rear spoiler makes the car in my opinion) but know very little about each model, what the changes are and what I should go for.

Simple question. If you were spending £8k on one what would be the key things to look out for / avoid and what year should I try and push for.

Check out the SIDC website (www.sidc.co.uk) as that will give you a general idea about the cars themselves.

The WRX's are more loaded than the UK models (and usually a lower mileage) but cost more in insurance and must be run on Optimax plus an octane booster. I have a MY99 imported WRX and I'm well pleased with it - I'm certainly glad I chose it over a UK spec model.

As for whether to go for a UK or Jap, well, there will be plenty of arguements for both!

But the Japs are usually more highly specc'd, more expensive to insure and usually need to run on a minimum of S/Unleaded.....

UK usually have the advantage of a warrantee.... and UK service history.

Cheers chaps. Having a quick read I like the thought of a Jap Spec 275bhp WRX STi - are there any specialist dealers you can point me to? I have a feeling I may end up spending £15k at this rate!!

Just how much of a nightmare is it tracking down suitable petrol stations to fill up with the necessary juice? I've only ever had one car that likes super unleaded (fiesta rs turbo) but more often than not I would chuck 4 star down its neck and it would be happy. I noticed a topic from someone asking for suitable petrol stations between M4 and M40 - are they that rare???

 

Most of the big boys do it BP Shell do it in the guise of optimax. Texaco as well. it is the small backstreet and leased jobbies that dont normally do it.

I heard Q8 garages are stopping doing LRP and getting in SUL.

so it seems the trend is more rather than less
