hi all

anyone know where I can get hold of performance figures on-line for a Vectra V6 GSI - a friends thinking of buying one and i'm trying to talk him out of it and get a Scoob instead!

I nearly bought one through a Vauxhall employee discount scheme but I stopped because they did a face lift and I wasn't sure about the looks. Glad I did because if you thought depreciation on Scoobs were bad then take a look at any Vauxhall

As for performance then it wasn't as fast as a 16V GTE Astra, but more comfy. IMHO you may as well buy a Skoda RS if you must have a mainstream car(cheaper and quicker).

Go for the scoob, it's leagues ahead in any direction.

A new model vectra is out next jan, it will be entirely different, so expect the residuals of the old ones to fall through the floor (or just even further)!

Guy who works with me has a my2000 gsi 5 door. looks good with the imsher front & rear kits he has on it and he has had it superchiped and a k&n induction kit put on. Does not go bad at all and suprisingly for a vauxhall handles not to bad. all the toys inc traction control and he returns 26/7mph (and does'nt hang about ). not as good as a scooby by far imho but for a tourner with space and comfort not bad at all.

So the new one is slower in all respects despite having same BHP & more torque & being lighter.....? must be the gearing

Regal Motor Sports do a small 'SUPERCHARGER' for the 2.5 vectra cost about £2,500 and should take the BHP to 200++

Subaru do a PPP which takes the BHP to 240bhp+ for £1700. Being slightly pejorative there! And you could get 270bhp+ for that amount if you went full decat, induction and ECU. But GSIs are crap in comparison to even the (old) Mondeo ST200, Peugeot 406 V6, and Alfa 156 V6. Surely he has much better choices.

Goto agree with John. Even if he needs the Vectra's space and comfort etc. The Vectra is widely condemned as the worst in class as a drivers car.

The Mondeo or 406 are miles ahead of the Vectra.

In the words of a Mr J Clarkson.
There are only three reasons not to buy a car.
1 its vastly overpriced.
2 its dangerous.
3 its a Vauxhall Vectra.

I drove a Vectra before I bought the V6 Mondeo. Turn in nearly non existent and traction control cutting power in every corner when pushing on.

All the above are also not in the same league as the Scoob for performance, handling and driver involvement.

If he needs a big, comfortable, semi economical car get the Mondeo V6. If he wants an involving performance car get the Scoob.

For a little comparison:

Pug 406 3.0 V6 194-210bhp - similar torque in lbft, 0-60 6.9, 0-100 19.4 Top 150mph. And these figures are on the 194bhp pre-facelift. It is quieter, smoother riding and outhandles the Vectra. It is better equipped, more reliable. And I'll say again how smooth the ride is. The Mondeo does turn in a bit better, and you get a firmer ride to compensate. We bought one as a second car for £7k with 34000 miles -leather, cruise, climate, 16" alloys, 205 tyres, subtle but nice bodykit. And I later found out our car was bought at auction by the dealer for more then 1k less!

But I wouldn't go near it new £23K! And now 7K after barely running it in. Ouch for the owner from new! But interestingly, I don't feel shortchanged when driving it even compared with MY00 PPP (well not too much anyway).

Mondeo in ST200 trim is a stunning car in it's own right with quite nice handling really! And incredible compared with a Vectra.

 

...Also the new GSI is only 180bhp (down from 194), despite being a 2.6 rather than 2.5 - claimed to be as quick though

For the Money - if it has to be a V6 - the Alfa 156 is the one to go for. Handles better, looks better, built better and sounds simply awesome. I had one for a year and still ache for it at times - stunning car.

 

Drove one at length - pre facelift. Mate of mine is a dealer principal.

Had changed final drive (Irmsher bits) to lower gearing and different cams. Total cost came to about £700. Still had good torque.

Made a huge difference. the thing could handle well too. Way better than any other Vectra.

Recon it would do mid 6s to 60 and 16ish to 100. In other words, faster on the move than a UK WRX. Saw 150+ indicated.

I'll bet you can get a really mint one second hand for buttons, spend £1000 on aforementioned bits and have a car that will be as quick as a uk scoob in the REAL world.

It is, however, still a vectra and I'd never have one...LOL

I have also driven a vectra. No feel as a drivers car, GSI felt slow evan when compaired to my previous saxo. Maybe a motorway cruiser but not a lot else.
