I was forced to put £5 of standard RON95 unleaded in my tank, on a Sub P1, a few days ago, but filled up within 30 miles on Optimax.

Will this have caused any damage?

No, because correct me if I'm wrong but the P1 can be run on 95 RON all its life if your a) a muppet b) cruel Besides it's a very small amount and as long as you weren't booting it I can't see there being a risk of det.

uhm aren't you guys going a tad silly with the "WE HAVE TO FILL WITH OPTIMAX.." "WE HAVE TO FILL WITH OPTIMAX.." "WE HAVE TO FILL WITH OPTIMAX.." "WE HAVE TO FILL WITH OPTIMAX.." "WE HAVE TO FILL WITH OPTIMAX.." bollox - don't believe the hype....

how many cars were running perfectly fine before optimax came out...

is it worth the extra 9p?

my opinion = no

Running on 95 RON will not be too bad for your car if it hasnt been mapped to run on anything higher.

snowcrash - As for your comments about 'not beleiving the hype' 'does it make a difference, no' etc.. then I will have to disagree with you. If you have a highly modified car like me that runs an aggressive map then optimax is a must otherwise it would run like a bag of poo. Just the price of high power i guess.

You may not think Optimax is worth the extra but I have noticed a distinct improvement in my car's performance since switching, and I will go out of my way to ensure I get Optimax, (and even allow himself to take it to work so she gets filled up!)

It could be it doesn't suit everyone's car, if you've used it and haven't noticed any difference then great - just think of all that money you're saving

did over 40K Miles in Sti Mk 1, over 90% of which was using normal unleaded. The car was not de-limited so never really thrashed at top end but no issue in engine. It went through clutches though

Snowcrash, where are you buying Optimax at 9p a litre more? It's only about 4 or 5p more and the cost works out about the same over a tankful taking the improved consumption into account.

I get "check engine" if I go from Optimax to NUL - until the ECU picks up on it.

I would work out the economy of Optimax against NUL - myself and a couple of colleauges worked it out to be marginally cheaper MPG wise...

Life before optimax meant :

Esso SUL 98 RON + OB and then ESSO SUL 97 RON + OB and Shell SUL 97 + OB.

In answer to the original question shoudl be okay but on a grey import or P1 then take it very easy and keep the revs down and try and keep off boost until you can get good fuel in and maybe drop some OB in.

P1s were mapped to run on 97 RON. You probably won't cause damage running on 95 RON because the ECU will retard the ignition timing to protect the engine. That said it'll run like s**t on NUL.

Question

Does anyone know whether you have to reset the ECU if you have been running on UL then Change to SUL and vice versa bearing in mind the car is fitted with a PPP?
If I don't can I also change to Optimax without resetting the ECU?

Rasher, since I'm too lazy to write up the info on how to reset the ECU manually, I'll tell you an even easier way to reset the thing. All you have to do is disconect the battery overnight and your ECU would be resetted.

But yeah, if you've put in NUL in your tank, I'd advise you to do this..

For the first 8 months of running my MY99 i used 95 RON and week in, week out i got between 17.5mpg and 19.5 mpg. Since i started using SUL i average between 21mpg and 22.5 mpg. So if you can be arsed doing the sums you will find it's actually saving you money, not to mention the fact the car seems to run smoother!
