I have seen a classic for sale with the following spec. I am always a bit dubious about anything with so much power in case of issues particularly as i am not a mechanic in anyway. Is there anything in particular to ask the seller in relation to this spec and what to look for when viewing?

I have been told to ask 400bhp at the wheels or crank but not sure what else should be asked for. I have been told a surge tank will be fitted due to the seller saying it wants to go lean when below half a tank. Is this a thing? Or for them to know that does that mean it could have already ran lean and would that have damaged something?

If it's on a 5 speed wrx box , it won't last long as in the box , 6 speed is much better as tougher , the more modern 6 speed further uprated , if it's a jdm 6 speed then shorter ratios , 400 is higher than I would go ,as mine are daily drivers and 2.5 engines , but if well built on a 2 litre engine , which it sounds like it is , it sounds like a decent build and power , just check for rust and ask about the g box 👍

 

hi, its a 5 speed for definite but was rebuilt when engine was apparently. The thing that concerns me is the fact it is apparently trying to run lean even after surge tank fitted. Could this just require a tweak to the map or if it is something that needs replacing what is it likely to be?

 

They say 1-4 are the same 5-6 shorter on jdm but with jdm 6 speed You can hit 60mph in 2nd where with UK box You need to switch to 3rd.
Running lean could be map issue ,injectors,fuel pump something fuel relative
should take fuel from tank if its 1/2, chevron anti surge assembly could help if thats an issue

This is what worries / worried me. They seem genuine enough and have told me and are looking into it who9ch i guess is reassuring as they could have just kept it quiet. But i guess if there has been some damage done now its a bit late, not sure how you would tell? What sort of tests would you have done? compression? leak down tests?

 

If it running fine and not rattling too much , you take your chances , my foz fuel pump was failing and was reducing power , as it was running a bit lean , engine is still running fine years later , difficult to say if damage has been done unless it's obvious damage , the fact they have been honest is a big start , if it smokes or unhealthy rattles then more concerned 👍

 

Apparently it turned out to be a faulty O2 sensor so it has been replaced. The fancy gizmos on the ECU mean it has lean and oil pressure and knock protection built in so should be fine. It has supposedly had compression tested and is all good. If i ask for the results what would you want / expect to see across the cylinders?

Subaru standard turbo spec is 146 to 175 psi with no more than 7 psi between cylinders. Minimum pressure 138 psi wear limit. For accuracy, compression tests should be carried out with engine hot, all plugs removed, fuel injector connectors removed and throttle wide open while cranking.
