Default Andy f turbo advice

Hi all,
I am changing the spec on my 1997 type r and would like some advice on turbo choice if possible. I bought the car with quite a high spec and producing 445bhp but quite laggy due to the larger turbo,ok for the strip but not a fast road car. The engine was recently built by Autosportif but the previous owner specced the turbo and injectors. What i am looking for is low lag like my old standard Sti type ra and around 350 bhp. I am looking at buying a Andy forrest Tdo5 16g along with 440cc or 550cc injectors and then a remap,what do you think? Any input appreciated.

The spec now...
* STI Version 8 block
* Engine stroked and bored out to a 2.2 litre
* Long stroke 2.5l billet crankshaft
* Omega 92.5mm oversized pistons and rings
* Steel Arrow H section conrods
* Modified Uprated Big End Bearings
* Baffled Sump
* Steel multilayer Head Gaskets
* ARP Head stud conversion kit
* APS SR 55 Turbo - Change to Td05 16g ???
* APS Front Mount Intercooler
* APS 3 1/2" internal diameter Turbo back Race Exhaust
system
* APS Cold Air Intake
* GT II spec Tubular Headers and Up Pipe (unequal
length and wrapped with heat wrap)
* 800cc Injectors - Change to 440cc or 550cc ???
* Walbro uprated fuel pump
* Uprated fuel pressure regulator
* Uprated fuel lines (with parallel fuel rail
conversion)
* Uprated breather system (with oil catch tank)
* HKS dump valve
* GEMS fully mappable motorsport ECU with Antilag,
Mapped by Steve Simpson - Remap
* AP racing clutch

regards mark

Mark- MD321H turbo, spools like a VF28, but capable of 400bhp with the right mods, best of both worlds, but will cost you! Injectors, erm, 550s should do it would have thought. Is Gems a mafless ECU? (forgive the ignorance) if not, replace it with Simtek. That would be a nice set up for the road!

Hi
I know of the Md321h but as you say,the price is an issue I thought that with my setup any smallish turbo would spool up nicely?
I believe the Gems is mafless but again,do not want to spend big bucks as the gems was £1500

Oh, just noticed you have a 2.2. Yep a 16G should spool up very nicely with that set up, wouldn't it a be a little out of puff at the top end though? Larger TD05? e.g. 18/20G? Just seems a shame to have such a strong engine build and not take advantage of it I would have thought the 400bhp mark was achievable without sacrificing too much in the way of response?

Maybe have a word with David at APi for advice

Thanks for the reply...I understand what you are saying but i value the low down and mid range power more than top end. I know what you mean about the strong engine but at least it should give me no problems running around 350bhp and take everything thats thrown at it I just was not sure whether a 16g would be ok with the huge Aps front mount i/c and pipework.

Why would you need to spend £400 on smaller injectors than you already have?

Would this benifit anything?

i just bought a 20g from andy.
just incase you were thinking about a 18g he doesnt make them now recons the 20g is just as quick at spooling up after he has worked his magic.

Sam at Zen is currently selling his 400bhp v.2 Type RA. It produces this on his std TD05 16G turbo!!!... But, he's had it carefully ported and polished, and this is sufficient for it to be able to flow enough for 400.

I'm assuming Zen themselves carried out the actual porting (or at least commissioned it to a specialist).

The attraction is the low down torque, as it's still a relatively small turbo (compared to most off the shelf 400bhp options) - possibly the earliest spooling available(?) - plus as most members know, they're robust little blighters. And of course, it's a a very, very cheap way of getting 400! Three very good pros, and no cons, IMHO!

Either get an exchange new one from Andy F (with the correct front entry compressor cover), or a decent, 2nd hand OEM MY93-96 job, get it recon'd, and convert to FE. Then get it ported and polished as mentioned...

Sam's 400bhp was run on pure E85 so quite a bit more than you would acheive on std pump fuel.

If a new MD321H is out of the question - pick one up second hand. It is the most likely looking turbo to fit your needs.

Leave the 800cc injectors in.

My bad ... Totally forgot about that - rather salient - point .

In that case, I agree, a second hand MD321H is the way forward...

Area52autosport ST380 turbo or even the ST420 would work well for what you want, they are also very well priced
