Default What is going on...

I've had this before in tesco where I turn the key and just get a buzzing sound locked the car came back and it fires to life.

Most recently it happened so I changed the battery for brand new and all has been great.

Today I go out, come back and the kids play in the car. 4hrs later I go to go out and the buzzing noise is here.
I think great dead battery and put it on charge. Get 12.6v and still buzzing.
connect wifes car and irngoes up to 13.6 and still buzzing.

I'm sure this car has started many times on 12v.
Surly if there's not enough volts the dash lights dim and the car makes a pathetic attempt at starting.

The car has a cobra alarm and had a new starter motor last year.

I wonder if it's the starter solinoid but where is it on an 05 jdm.

Why if its a dead battery would it not start from a jump start

The starter solenoid is on the starter


There is a starter relay fitted as well - somewhere. (Assuming you have to press the clutch to start)
Probably next to the fuseboard in the relay block by drivers right knee.
Possible location but it is JDM

Thanks Don.
I really don't think it's the starter as there is no engine clicks or noises when turning the key but a very loud buzz from around the ignition area.
But yes Jdm with clutch down.

Reading another thread with similar sounding issues I really do think its the fuel pump relay which I expect to be these silver cylinders.

when turning the key the top one buzzes like crazy.


I'm going to ask expecting a no but can I remove the fuse box from its location without disconnecting the battery?

Then if the relay block is located to the LH side of the fuse box with its fuses at the bottom then the starter relay is probably the third down from the top.

I have nothing useful to add, but I love that starter motor in Japanese becomes "Sutata mota" - it's like they've lifted the english word and made it sound Japanese

Literaly been outside trouble shooting the buzzing noise and its this relay.
3rd hole down from the number 10 fuse.
I can't make the numbers out on that relay with the subaru box and I'm about to test its continuity.

Well thats a disappointment.
managed to source 2 with exact part numbers as mine and neither resolved the issue.

On a forester forum theres mention of the brown one being the fuel relay.

Going to try Google translate your illustration above for the top relay.



Going to ask the alarm fitter if theres a chance the cobra has an inline fuse that may have blown or something.

So what, makes no difference, they are used in all models ???
You also previously said the top cylindrical one was buzzing ?? which is probably the Blower Fan relay

The fuel pump relay you mentioned is in fact a cylindrical one as well but mounted on the passengerside near the A pillar and usually has a green connector.

I was wrong. I thought it was the silver cylinders but its not. It was the fuel relay

Thank you for your persistence.
I took both sides off the seat belt pillars and couldn't see any relays or even space on the bar going across the roof to fit some relays.

Exhausted yesterday and confusing everyone. Even had a family member look at the volt meter while I turned the key to see if the spade connector had power and he replied: first time it did and second time it didn't. - I only tried once.

To stop confusion the buzzing is coming from the 2nd relay down above the empty one.
the start motor one. Remove it and buzzing stops. There is 12v here and continuity.
looks like I found the green fuel pump relay and main brown relay which I'll test shortly.
* Both Brown & green plug has 12v

I found a thread on a skyline page with similar symptoms and it was a faulty alarm. I do want to test all car parts before calling him as I can't tell whats car wires and alarm.

FIXED:

The alarm man came and within the hour fixed it. He said it was a bad earth on the ignition but also said it was so hidden he even had to look hard for it.

I still wonder if a wire had come loose from the alarm but ill never know. I know you never blame your own work 😉
