As my Subaru is for sale at the moment, I am rarely using it now. As a result, when I have been starting it of late (every 2 - 3 weeks) I have had to jump start it as the battery has been flat.

Anyway, last night at 2:30am, the alarm started going off!!!!Neighbours up and all that.......I think this was because the battery was so flat that it tripped the alarm.

The key was not enough to sort it so I has to jump start the Scooby (imagine the neighbours faces.......me finding the garage keys, the jump leads, moving the other cars..........)

Now, I assume the alarm sounder has a battery back up of its own and so disconnecting the battery is not an option.

Also, on the basis that the car sits in a locked garage up my driveway with my wifes and my cars in front of it, would I be able to simply leave it unlocked or does the immobiliser/ alarm automaticlly arm itself? Is there any way I can change the settings using the digital keypad under the dash to suit?

I am going to go for a decent run today to charge it (any excuse!!) however would like a semi-permanent solution to this util the car sells. I do not want the alarm going off when we are at work or out or whatever for obvious reasons. I am reluctant to get a new battery as I reckon it's fine, just lack of use is letting it go flat.

Subaru is an MY04 STI8 Type UK for ease of reference.

Now it's funny you posting this because I have been having the same problem with the Scoob I have just purchased (2004 STI).....

Drove it home after buying it and it then stood in the garage for a week. When I then went into the garage and went to unlock it the alarm went off and I couldn't bloody stop it!!

I eventually worked out that the battery had gone flat, and had to piggy back another battery off the one in the car to start it/disarm the immobilizer.

I have since found out from reading around on here that this seems to be a common problem (I think some people suggest it's the tracker draining the battery??) and that this model of scoob doesn't always charge the battery when driving the car unless the battery is being drained (drive with side lights on etc to charge it.

I have had another battery in my car and got the original one tested (which reported as ok) however the original battery has been in the garage for a week and when I plugged a battery meter thingy on it yesterday the battery only had 50% charge remaining when it was fully charged a week ago so I don't think that battery’s too great anyway.

Now I thought all was ok, main prob being the original battery was a bit duff, I went out in the Scoob yesterday (car had been standing a week but started fine with other battery in it) drove down to see my bro (about 15-20 mins down the road) got there turned car off, then had to move it around where it was parked, turned it off again. Then went to start it to leave and it wouldn’t start, battery was dead again!!!

When I was driving it I didn’t have lights on or owt but surely these things shouldn’t be draining the battery while your driving it???

Dont really want the worry of thinking "is it going to start" everytime I go to use it. When driving home I had the air con and side lights on and it seemed to start fine when I tried it when I got home.

Mine used to do this, turned out to be the software on my PSi3. This has now been solved, and the car sits for weeks without running down.

During the time I was finding the fault, I purchased an accumate charger

Accumate 6V or 12V Car/ Motorbike Battery Charger on eBay, also Electrical Security, Accessories, Motorcycle Parts Accessories, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 30-Jul-08 10:52:07 BST)

There is a lead which you can bolt onto the battery, and the charger just plugs into that. Kept the car fully charged so I didn't have to jump start it at 4am !

Very pleased with it, and well worth 50quid !

I had the same thing with my 05 STi a few years back. Turned out to be the Tracker system taking six hours to go into standby and wearing down the battery. Got them to replace the board with a newer version which goes into standby in 1 hr and it has only happened once since. There also seems to be a known problem with the "smart" alternator not being so smart - solution is to drive with your side lights on, so there is some drain on the battery and the alternator charges it.

No one has mentioned if the alarm can be told not to activate by changing via the keypad? i.e. leave the car unlocked

I can leave mine unlocked.. dunno if you have to enter a code for that though ? will have a look in my sigma book..

press the remote fob`s button with the ignition on, then press 3 on the keypad and immediately remove the keys.

This will put the car into "valet mode" if that helps ?

Basically shuts off auto-arm and passive immobiliser..

Sure did - came the next day!!

Just been reading the instructions (bit hungover this morning....) looks good so it does.

Just connected it all up, using the crocodile clips - the yellow and red LED's are on.

Ironically, the car started off the key after a weeks sitting...

Green light illuminated this morning!!!

Just taken it off as I reckon it will hold its charge for a couple of weeks now that it is FULLY charged.

Battery disconnected from the car and connected to the trickle charger, all seems OK so far.
