Been changing the oil (Mobil 1 motorsport) on my sti type R every 6.000 miles done the same on my last car 95 wrx. mixed journeys round town by the missis some motorway driving and some back road stuff by me but no track days. Point is should i change it more often ? . G.

Here in Brunei where the weather is 30+ Deg C everyday and 80% humidity, I've chosen a service interval of every 4,000 kms (2,500 miles) and that's running what the scoob likes best, Mobil S 10w-40 Semi Synthetic. This is a lot cheaper than Mobil 1 so it makes frequent oil changes less painful, pocket wise plus the engine likes it.

Not only do I service my Japan spec WRX ver 4 wagon frequently, I also pull out the dip stick every single day before i warm up the engine. Apparently this habit, as crazy as it may sound, has saved me a few times after the oil has been used for 4000 kms, oil level dipped below half. I figured since I drive the car hard, I should spend a couple of minutes to ensure oil is enough before i have fun with the car. So, driving habits like mine make it necessary to check/service more often. ps I never shift below 6,800 rpm with the stock ecu. When I had the Link, I was shifting at 7,500 rpm with a re-defined 8,000 rpm redline!

Engine has done 107,000 kms so far, engine compression test checked out ok with acceptable "wear" indication.

 

Every 3.5k my baby gets an oil change

 

About once a month!

The other thing Graham - if you really care then you should change your oil from Mobil to MOTUL - it is vastly superior in high load protection and no more expensive that Mobil 1 Motorsport (or flushing oil as my good friend calls it!)

I change mine half way between the 7.5k services, so that would be every 3.5 - 4k miles ish

Dave halfords stock flushing oil but not Motul so wheres the nearest stockist ?

will also change after trip to le mans as long (5hrs+)high speed run each way.

 

Motul is 15/50 - you need to buy the 300V competition oil. It is far superior to anything else I have tried - if it is good enough for Prodrive and Tommi Mak it is good enough for me.

I get much better oil pressures maintain in extreme circumstances than any other oil - including Castrol 10-60 - which should be better when hot - but it isn't.

Jan Shim, you are using semi-synth? If there is one thing everyone agrees about oil on here it is NOT to run semi-synthetic after running-in is complete.

I have never been happier with an engine oil than i have with Mobil S. The engine has done 107,000 kms, of which 40,000 kms were on Mobil S, the rest in the beginning were on Esso Ultron, Mobil 1 and Castrol RS in that order of sequence. I noticed nothing special from running full synthetics besides being really expensive, my Apexi Oil temp gauge shows negligible differences between the full and semi synthetic oils I have used. I dont circuit race or drag race, just rev the hell out of it as described earlier .. yet if "semi synthetics" were to be avoided post running-in then really the engine should have suffered major damage by now shouldn't it under the circumstances.

A mechanic friend who races his STi 5 in Australia had a chance encounter with PossumBourne team and Subaru during one of the many rallies and guess what? they don't recommend running fully synthetic oil in the EJ20 engine. I do my own research and to my delight found this to be true. He has been racing his STi using the same Mobil S and after 107,000 kms, nobody believes just how smooth and quiet my engine is. You could hear the faint piston "slap" if you listen hard but apart from that I'd say everything is going well with this "semi" nourished engine.

The point i'm making is that you should know what you are using the car for and then only you know if it's justifiable to spend extra money (here in Asia, fully synthetic oils cost a lot more) on the oil when semi would do the job just as well.

It's interesting neither me nor my friends had ever paid any attention to Mobil S until I was told to try it by a great mechanic/racer. As a respected consultant in the local Subaru community, you can imagine sales of Mobil S hit the roof after they ditched their expensive Castrol RS and Mobil 1 for it. The increase in demand for Mobil S means that you can now easily buy them from most shops :-).
