What day I've had.....

I've owned my car going on 6 yrs now (scooby wrx wagon) ye it's been mapped and had a few bits done but completely trouble free for the 6 yrs.

I then sell the car to my bro TODAY at 10:30am, we then both go out in the scoob to do a few things and he been as happy as Larry is blasting it about here and there, he gets a little over excited an drops it from 3rd down 2nd (going far too fast for the gear I might add) and misses the gear/hits the gear and slams his foot down and bang,crunch and wallop 2nd gear smashes to pieces ! And it must only be 13:00 !!!

Talk about feeling bad and awkward..........

We manage to get it to the garage and guess what, ye you guessed it new gear box.......

How bloody bad do I feel, one coz I've owned it trouble free for 6 years and have become attached to the dam thing and secondly coz I feel in some way responsible for it even though it wasn't me driving.

 

Clearly his driving style has taught him a expensive lesson in subaru gearboxes

 

Or gearboxes in general. Tell to learn how to drive! I hope you are not paying for it?

 

Nothing for you to feel awkward or responsible about. As said, the failure is down to the way it was being driven.

 

That's a very good point fella, from the moment we got in the car I was saying "learn the car,be careful don't destroy it today or kill your self"

Then bang he smashes the gearbox to smithereens within hrs of ownership......

Just to add this is his 5th gearbox he has gone through in a number of cars so it must be down to his driving.

 

No im not paying for it but he has hinted at it saying "it must have been weak or you must have weakened it" and "you could go halves"

Been mi bro I feel like I should do but I can't afford to fix a car he has broken.

Brother or no brother, anybody who doesn't have mechanical sympathy is a twit. Ok if you're dragging or on track **** happens but out and out idiocy is not to be excused. Give him a clip round the ear and some driving lessons. If he wants to gear down he needs to rev match.

 

5th gearbox? Jesus I have been driving for 15 years and haven't broken any! Come on, brother or not, he will only learn if HE is responsible for paying for HIS stupidity.

 

Nice excuse to fit a gearbox that's not made made of eggshells now

It's your own fault for not fitting the proper sti 6 speed,you should buy him one as it's down to you

You can feel sorry for him but there's no need to feel guilty! The gap between 2nd and 3rd isn't anything particularly odd so it just sounds like he misjudged it and killed it. When I first got mine I had a few moments where 3rd was a wee bit shorter than I'd have liked going in from 4th given I'd been used a fairly evenly spaced box in my previous car...luckily it wasn't so bad a misjudgement that I either got valves to float or screamed the synchro's into the bushes! Smooth gear changes may lose you a hundredth of a second in the traffic light race but being smooth means you don't look like a dick while stranded at the side of the road with a knackered car!

Guys an idiot and needs to learn to drive
Get him a IAM course which will teach him lots
Needs a push bike
Been driving 33 years /28 cars and never even replaced a clutch in my time

 

Because he'll probably give you a load of hassle and grief. If it were some guy who lived 50 miles away you'd ignore it but he'll probably try and use the rest of the family to sway opinion and put pressure on you.

At the end of the day, it's not your fault. You're a regular poster on here and everyone knows you've been running a clean car.

He's the one with the history of smashing gearboxes - I've caned the **** off several high performance (and regular) cars over the years and never needed to replace a clutch. Any clutch can go with general wear and tear but five just goes to show what a mechanically unsympathetic tool someone is. Most idiots learn after the second or third occurrence.

It's not the decent thing to help someone in this situation, as it is not a problem of your making.

 

Now I've slept on it I'm not feeling as bad today.

Thanks for comments above it brings home the facts that i shouldn't feel bad and it wasn't my fault, it was just down to the way it was been hammered.

Spoke to me bro tday and he has done a bit or research and is taking about putting an STI box in, are all STI boxes 6speed for the bug ?

 

Yep, will pretty much drop in

 

That'll be a bigger cost when he breaks it.
How about an auto box instead?
