Currently putting my engine together, have a brand new gates cambelt kit we're installing.

Every mark lines up on the belt, pulleys and casing prior to removing the tensioner pin but after releasing the pin and doing several rotations the right hand bank is always retarded 1 tooth on the inlet and exhaust. The left bank and crank line up ok (markings on pulleys/casing, not belt).

We've then tried advancing the timing 1 tooth on the right bank to compensate for it and sods law, only the inlet pulley was out.

The belt has been on/off 5 times now as it just refuses to line up and winding the tensioner in every time is taking forever. Anyone else had this problem?

 

You can wind it a thousand times and it will probably/possibly not line up. Make sure it's on right in the first place and then turn it over to make sure theres no contact and you should be good to go.

 

You are referring to the marks on the timing belt, which you are correct. But the OP is refering to the actual pulleys lining up again.

I have been through this many times and whilst I have seen them one tooth out, the main feeling is the markings never line up perfectly. It's been a little while but iirc if you advance the crank pulley a small amount to the right side of it's mark, the other pulleys should all line up?

 

I think i've got it, i advanced the 2 rhs pulleys and pulled the pin then instead of beginning rotating the crank I rotated back the rhs pulleys to take up the tension.

Now everything lines up (ignoring the belt marks) apart from being a nats **** out on the exhaust side. I'll give it 20 more rotations to get it to settle but think i'm good to go

The marks are a guide, they never all line up exactly.

 

With anything that is mass produced,there are manufacturing tolerances with regards to the timing marks etc plus you have to factor in things like the heads and deck faces being skimmed, head gasket thickness etc etc which all in turn can retard the belt timing.

When you need to get the ' lost clearance ' back, a good solution is to use the LIC adjustable/eccentric idlers which will bring everything bang on again.

Well not quite a thousand, it's around 175 turns or something similar to get it to line up, they must have arms like Popeye.
