TonyBurns - That sounds like a pipe for the boost control solenoid has come off. In the left centre of the engine bay, you will see a plate, just under that is a narrow pipe with a plastic joint next to a much bigger pipe, has that come apart?

As I said above, most importers/manufacturers do not administer their own warranty's on car's, they are done by independent companies, and they also do the used car warrantys, and to asses the risk, the data is shared between companies, this is where the data is collated from.

OK, but lets consider the case of a friend of mine.
He had an STI hatchback - 2009 I believe is when he got it from new.
It had its rev limited issue addressed before its first service.
Shortly after its first service, it decided to not want to play anymore, data was requested by Subaru UK, and sometime afterwards they said it was not being covered under warranty as the owner had driven the car to destruction.
How would the independent company know, or to to know about this particular vehicle?

As the sole task of all the warranty companies is to make sure they never pay out - fact. I would take the data with a pinch of salt.
The best way to find out would be ask API or some of the other rebuilders how many 2.5s they have rebuilt.
