Done a little digging for you;

UK classic;

STi Pre facelift

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifie...sti-v4/2003965

STi facelift (a wagon, apologies!)

I realise none of these cars may be for you but hopefully gives you some idea of what you can expect for your budget.

I agree with whoever said buy a little under budget to keep something back for any repairs etc you may need to make, If you have 4K then I'd say stick to looking at cars priced at 4k, then whatever you manage to knock off you can put back in your pocket!

ps. not to say you shouldn't consider Newages, but I don't know much about them hence not the best person to comment!

Yeah that extra 9p per litre is a real piggy bank breaker ...

Need to know a bit more of your driving history, because if your a front wheel drive only man you don't want to jump in at the STI V3 Type R deep end, you'd be better off introducing yourself slowly.

a lot of people think they want a classic then realise that it's a little more hardcore than they would of liked.

The way I see it is, you need to try both and have a think about what it is you really want.

You will get a decent example of either a blob wrx or if your lucky and wait you'll find a nice classic STI like the V3 in the for sale section.

P.S Blobs look best in black.

I bought my 05 reg blob wrx 15 months ago, it only cost me £3,600. I've done less than a grands worth of mods and now it's running 330bhp

Not true.

You go to the right broker and you may find they are cheaper, sadly if your in Norn Iron you'll get a bit of ring dhobi!

Buy a UK Classic car and get 208/215bhp standard or a JDM WRX/STi with 280bhp standard (or more with an ECUtek remap from MY99 on (OBD)). If it's pre MY99 then the newer ESL daughter boards in the ECU will allow MAF less running and are mappable.

I was looking for a Type R for around the same budget, and soon realised that well sorted and looked after examples demand a lot of money: £6-8k on average! You should also consider non type r's - one's that may be a little older but have had a decent rebuild done at some point - ideally a forged rebuild, that is documented and running sensible power.

Of course you could always save up a bit more and go for a type r, but be cautions on the cheaper ones out there.
Generally you get what you pay for.
