Indeed, if you start on a path of value for money then it gets even worse How much is a 6 Speed, Brembos, Springs, Heads, turbos, downpipes worth etc....
As I said before don't compare them to negative ends, be happy with your motor irrespective of where it sits in the performance pecking order

value for money is subjective, hence my post...if I were playing devil's advocate I'd say the £4k you have saved on the cost of an sti wouldn't cover upgrading the 270 to sti spec...therefore the tuning potential is lower

Doesn't matter which you buy, you'll upgrade it anyways so it's still going to cost you. It does help having a good STI second hand parts market though. I won't lie my running bill on upgrades has exceeded £6k but I got a forged rebuild done as part of that..

Then the WRX was right for you, the fact that you preferred the WRX to the STi has no bearing on the fact that the STi is engineered for a different customer with a different criteria or purpose for the car
People need to adjust their minds and note that just because something is different to what they need or like doesn't reflect negatively on the alternatives, be they higher or lower on the spec sheet It just means exactly that... you didn't like or need it
Similarly it doesn't reflect more positively on the car you chose just because it met your requirements... be happy with your decisions irrespective of where it sits in the performance pecking order

The original question was about equal power but with a difference of ratios and gears.
I'm not saying to do it but if a sti blob eye were to have the wrx box and diff would there be a difference in performance in the wrx equipped sti's favour? Due to gearing. I think that might be a simpler way of elaborating on the original question.

I currently have a wrx ppp and ye I would of liked a sti but at the time my funds didn't allow so when this came up for sale at the right price I snapped it up it does me its quick enough for me ye I admit I have put a few sti bits on it interior because it looks soo much better than the standard wrx interior and the intercooler just to keep the cooling down I don't get why there has to be such rivalry between wrx owners and sti owners we're all impreza owners and cherish our cars so lets stop the feud and enjoy our cars and ownership ye there isn't nothing wrong with a bit of banter now and then but you see so many threads on here where people are saying im thinking of buying a wrx etc and they get shot down in flames and told just buy a sti lol just my 2 cents

So ACTUALLY READ AND INJEST what i'm saying.
The problem came because I dared to suggest the WRX PPP was quicker than an STI to 60/80mph.
The other points I have made are.
At this age BOTH will need brakes looking at and BOTH will have tired suspension as well as the well known STI rear shock problem.
If your looking to go to 400+bhp the STI is the better place to start, anything above 500bhp buy the cheapest shell you can find.
I won't be commenting further.
