I understand how someone could say that the "children" that committed this crime could have been "sick" or not been able to handle the reality of their actions.
I understand, I don't agree.
However to feel sorry for Venables, when on release he actually sort out to download pictures of children being abused, I'm sorry, regardless of if you think it's his fault or not, the man/boy needs to be removed from this planet.

If he is mentally ill and the results of being ill cause him to be a risk to children, then yes.
You take each case as it presents, you review everyone as an individual. I have two children not far from Jamies age and I can put my hand on my heart and say, if you gave me choice, he'd be dead.

But not now, not having SEEN what kids can get up to not knowing that what they are doing is wrong, or will result in this, that and the other.......
They were kids, just kids.
Read the article about their questioning by the police. It's heart-rending.
And to blame Venables now, now he's had, thanks to their crime and our response, probably the WORST upbringing he could have had...no, not for me.

And, at the time they did the crime, so would I.

So whats next then ? trust him to baby sit your kids ? give him a job driving a bus ? or pay him for doing nothing and protect him from the people he's hurt ?
Go back to the day he killed Jamie, how would you have handled it ?

I honestly DO NOT know.
At the time, I, like you, felt they should have been put down.
My eldest was four when it happened and my youngest one. So yes, I was strongly in that camp.
Then, as my eldest grew up, it became obvious that he was ADHD. Life was difficult...for a LONG time. I saw him do stuff that "normal" kids wouldn't do, stuff that landed him in awful trouble, stuff that put him, and others into awful danger. Afterwards, on discussing it with him, it became obvious that he COULD NOT put two and two together and get four He COULD NOT see what the results of his actions were going to be.
And remember that both I, and his mother, were professional people who looked for help, and brought him up as best we could, but STILL we had problems. They have only just started to tail off after he got to about 25..........
Now think about those tow kids, Robert Thompson and Jon Venables. Upbringing? The norm for them was cruelty, punishment, abuse and neglect.
So......they did what they did...no-one will EVER really know what went through their minds at the time, but they were TEN year old, and pretty low-level ten year olds at that.
And society's response?
I don't, in all honesty know what else we could have done. The mood in the country was grim. They needed to be taught a lesson.
Unfortunately, our only recourse was to lock them uip...with others, older than them and who would teach them even more evil.
What's the alternative? I wish I knew, mate, but I STILL feel for those two, just as I do when I think of that little boy...it makes me feel like weeping. Somehow, a whole load of lives have been destroyed, and one lost forever.
Words fail me.........

Apologies Alcazar, having looked at it again it wasn't a very good post. But looking at your response about your son I can understand how you have some sympathy for the boys but it's something I still can't understand about the two boys. It has never been said to my knowledge that they had any genuine illness, it was just a sadistic side they both expressed for no reason. Having a son recently diagnosed with aspergers which leads him to be violent on occasions I still would not be able to forgive him if he ever stooped to something like those two did.
