What do you base your 7% share on? Last time I looked those stats were over a 10 year period. Look at sales for the last two years, especially look at the most vulnerable and most targeted market, home users, now, how do you explain the difference.
I would definitely run AV on my PC, if I had a PC that I used. I take advantage of all of the security features that come with OSX, they do a great job.
If it helps, I worked for an Antivirus company, we got infected, apart from the Macs of course.

As for looking at sales for the last two years, oh dear, anyone with a little cognitive ability will tell you this does not tell you how many computers there are that are in use, ie, your 7 year old iMac that you still use for example. Take you own advice, use Google, check Gartner, Net Applications or any other stats and analytics organisation, there you find current information of how wrong you are.
I think I'll leave it here, I can't bring myself to converse with someone anymore who has the cognitive ability of a fruit.

Don't get me wrong, I'd like a new one, but it's still working ok.

To answer the OP (and ignore the usual bitch fest from the usual suspects).
From what you have said you want to do, I don't think you need an iMac / OS X. It is basically just an Intel based PC in a very fancy and expensive dress.
It may well last longer than a windows based Machine, but is it really worth the extra money? If you use OS X, and / or apps that are Mac only, then it could make sense, otherwise, I'd go with windows - check the machine can run Windows 7, as I really don't get on with Windows 8 and cannot recommend it, 8.1 perhaps, but that's not out yet
If you do decide to go for an iMac, I would strongly recommend looking at the Refurbished section on Apple's website (http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/hom...deals/mac/imac). You can save anywhere from £50 to £250+ all depends on what they have listed. It still comes with a full one year Apple warranty, and you are buying direct from Apple.
