New diesels have a DPF which clog up on short journeys. They can be a pain to clear - 4K RPM for 30 mins to clear or clog up altogether, won't recharge and slap a £1000 bill on your lap.
Also on cold cycle diesels will chew the fuel until they are warm.
I've removed the DPF, EGR and EGR cooler from my A4 TDI170.
I'm part of the local model railway club (sounds the height of geek? you'd be right!) and one of the old boys has an ecoboost focus and he said it was great on fuel. It looked like a 3 pot engine with 2 turbos. Did more than my Audi which for a diesel is a bit pants at 43mpg average.

2.0 tdi vag here, 9 year old sport Touran, averaging mid 50 mpg. Short plus long journeys, never had a problem. Can see well over 60 mpg on a run.

I agree, the figures are wrong. I get considerably more than official figures in all the cars I've owned. If you've got poor mpg then more than likely there's an issue with the car or driving style.

Often the figures are under optimal conditions so in reality should be impossible to achieve. I find that due to my driving style smaller engined cars offer no economy benefit over slightly larger engines.
For example my B160 with 1.5l 95bhp I had for a courtesy car for a week averaged around 25mpg. My B200 Turbo 2.0l Turbo petrol averages 24 doing exactly the same trips. This is because the revs have to go very high on the underpowered car just to get it to go.

I wish we had the old MPG calculation system...used be just at a constant set speed. None of this urban from cold and extra urban cycle crap.
I have the old mpg figures for my Jag...22mpg at constant 75mph....guess what it does at constant 75mph? Yup, about 22mpg!
The biggest let down for us is the Seat Altea TDi 140 which has never ever come close to its claimed 47mpg average let along its claimed 55mpg extra urban: On a 1000mile run it avarages at best 41mpg...Our Bmw 530d GT does 41mpg on the exact same journey. Not a bad difference considering its a car that weighs 500kg extra and has 100bhp and 170lb/ft more than the Altea and has more emissions control! BM's claimed average is 43mpg...believable and probably achieveable with less right foot.

Im sure most are fed up with having to write about it. Its a way to vent frustration as many people are now unable to afford to run the cars that are their passion, me included. Its gutting.

Lol I don’t feel so bad at getting only 25mpg in my RS Mk2. Luckily I don’t have a long commute (which also doesn’t help the MPG) but then again I bought the car without mpg in mind. I am quite happy that it is 25mpg as my FN2 CTR was only 28mpg over 25k miles but had no torque so you had to thrash it to get anywhere.
