How do you know that it wasn't the geometry that made the improvement alone? I have had tyres that seem horrendous only to be transformed by a geometry correction.

I have a P1 and it's the first Jap car I have owned and I would rate a standard Sti a very good car for the money. In actual fact when comparing the performance and handling to other cars I would say it's excellent value for money.

Going by what I have seen, experienced and comments I have heard over the past 6 yrs of owning mine I would also say that a large % of Subaru drivers haven't driven the car anywhere near the limit regarding bends.

He needs to at the very least get a geometry check. When I first got my type r I thought it was the dogs ( coming from an m reg 2.0l rxe Laguna, similar to an RS) ;-) and I thought it was unbelievable but overtime realised that it wasn't. A few suspension mods a geo adjustment and a few performance mods made a big difference

Sold my R33 GTR to my mate, who then sold it coz he was surprised at struggling to keep up with me.He then had Fiesta (220bhp),but now in a Hawkeye STi and he's never been happier.Suggest the op goes to a scoob meet and opens his mouth, instead of hiding behind a keyboard

Firstly i dont see how me living with my parents has anything to do with anying, other than the fact you must be jealous cause you couldnt afford a scooby at my age otherwise you wouldnt keep bringing it up....

And secondly, yeah id say ive had a fair amount of experience in my short time driving.... But as they say quality is better than quantity so im probably still a better driver than you... Plus my reactions are probably better than a middle aged man like yourself too *

like i said this thread is a joke, anyone who comes on here comparing a Fiesta to a scooby is taking the **** IMHO. these cars have a cult following for a reason and as for having driven other cars, i think i am fairly well qualified to comment given i have owned the following FWD/RWD & 4WD in various states of tune over the last 15 years or so

AX GT
Renault 5 GT Turbo x2
Astra GTE 16v
Pug 205 GTI 1.6
Pug 205 GTI 1.9 with GTi6 engine and 1.6 gearbox
MG ZR160
MG ZS180

Mazda RX8
Nissan 200sx
Merc 230 Kompressor Sport Manual

Celica GT4
Evo
UK Impreza Classic

I have been lucky enough to drive and own many performance cars and can say that while not the fastest amongst all of them them my Scoobs have all been there or thereabouts in terms of making real world A to B progress. A good blend of power, handling and grip.

If you are seriously finding yours slow compared to other cars you have driven then you need to get it looked at or take it on a trackday with more experienced Scoob owners and see what's what. I agree that they maybe don't quite live up to the hype in some ways, but a 150bhp Fiesrta shoudln't really be a match all things being equal and your Scoob sorted!

No offence mate just a bystander here, but everyone on the planet knows Subaru's handle superbly... They are a next level to hot hatches or "hyper hatches" as they are now calling them, and everyone in the car world know this.

Im 22 aswell and have owned my scoob 4 months now, I had an astra vxr nurburgring before this running 320bhp and every handling mod available. They just don't compare in the corners though, when I first got the car I took it very steady as the scoob feels very big in comparison but was a bit unsure if it handled aswell untill I started looking down at the speedo and I would be doing 20mph faster round a corner cruising than I was ***** out in the vxr...

Basically what Im saying is take it steady for awhile, learn the car (I also suggest modding it ) and you will see it really is a different kettle of fish.

My 2pence anyway

P.s. If a fiesta ST was stuck up your trumpet driving lessons may also be in order

i dont know if this has been mentioned yet... but if the OP has gone from FWD Ford to a AWD Scooby and he`s being nailed and owned by the Fiesta in the twisty roads, it has to be the driving style he`s using and obviously confidence in his Scooby. For instance, backing off the throttle in an Impreza after comitting speed into a bend will have some scarey and unpredictable handling. And this will give you the idea that an Impreza isn`t as good as people say.

"Ash", I`m not slating your driving skills, you could probably drive a FWD car much better and quicker than I could. Just don`t expect to jump in a Scooby and instantly expect the car to be as good as their Hype.
Scoobys do have a Hype for a genuine reason, they are "That Good" once you learn how to get the best out of them.

My advice is to slow down, don`t push your Scooby beyond your own confidence. Go for drives without your mates in their Fords trying to push you into drive irratically. Find good, quiet twisty roads and get to know the car.
You will then realise you actually have a 14 year old that can and will out perform many of the newer Fords your mates have. (Especially The Fiesta ST....)
I`m on my 5th Scooby, a 20 year old V1 Type-RA (The Great-Great-Great GrandFather of all Scoobies.... ) and in my opinion one of the best models... And on Track Days i know it can hold it`s own and shake an angry stick at the Young Pup Motors...

Last thing... It`s not all about speed and racing your mates... Eventually if you push too hard in any car, you will get hurt... So be sensible..

I can't believe this thread is still going on.

He's a frightened little puppy with a car thats beyond his level of skill/driving knowledge, he can't drive it fast because he's bottling it in the bends, it's as simple as that.

He needs to go out with someone that knows how to drive a type r.

OP get yourself over to Zen Motorsport let them check it over and take it for a spin to see if something is wrong with it, maybe the bushes are worn or the steering wheel is missing.

well ive even seen my missus smoke evo's and Focus Rs's well upto 120 where mine stops, while driving my 20year old Wrx RA.

only the other day a black evoVIII was behind, with what must of been his son in passenger seat,

i seen him come out on to opposite side of road as if to come past, so said nail it! to the wife to which she did and lone behold he filed back in behind as he couldnt pass,

this went on for about 5 miles all b roads lol, with him behind....

eventually we pulled in to our estate, he went by and gave a nice beep beep of appreciation..

20 year old ra two adults two teenagers and a boot full of ASDA.

if by missus can do it, there must be something wrong

if it were me i wouldnt be letting anyone know i got smoked by a st,

maybe with all these fiesta chaps going back and saying i keep up or beat Impreza's, is why i get so many of the little ****ers up my *** wanting a go!

nathan

Sorry mate but your car must be knackered as my old classic ra used to destroy my cousins rs, ive driven his car and thought its the biggest waste of 21k, horrendous torque steer and thats in the dry, in the wet it just holds back due to the ecu pulling the power back due to loosing traction.
Also looks like its crashed through halfords front door and all the cheep tatt has stuck too it.
Id be getting your type r looked at and fixed as there fantastic cars when going the way they should, either that learn too drive it

Why are you bothering Ash?
I would think at least 95% of the people who belong to a Subaru forum will have a different opinion to the one you have expressed.
Are you having a laugh or just trolling for a bit of a wind up?

As the man above said...

If you're content with 2WD hatches that's fine, we all like different things thankfully.

If you don't like the scoob, or the way it performs then your choices are to be rid of it or find out if it's the car or your driving that's causing you a problem.

Why was it a waste of 21k? Not everythings about speed you know

And i agree it is challenging to put the power down in the low gears but the 'torque steer' isnt 'horrendous' it just lets you know its there. Its harder to drive than the scooby were you just plant your foot and your off, some people like the challenge of having to work with a car to get the best from it.

Because it feels cheap and looks like a mcdonalds special that you see doing laps of the drive through, not on about speed but if spending that kinda money id want 21k worth of car not 10k worth of car and 11k worth of plastic, that money should have been spent on 4wheel drive, o i forgot ford cant make 4 wheel drive and had too use cosworth to build them a decent car years ago. they cant even build a decent engine, they had too use a volvo engine lol

It's a sign of the times when a FWD car bears the legendary RS Cosworth badge, they should have made it 4WD or not made it at all IMHO
