As I understand, sexuality has certainly been an issue for most religions and cultures, not just for the Christianity. We are talking Christianity here, to which, it does matter what sexuality you have. If you aren't in a heterosexual relationship but in a gay one, you don't have some privileges as the heterosexuals have, and you may be made to feel excluded. So I think it's quite important for that chap to make ample fuss about his gay sexuality. He just wants to know where he stands for the church; not only for his congregation but generally. Valid fuss imo.
