A couple of years ago I sold my clubman Gp A spec Subaru for £12k , that was a 2 door type R running standard hubs , basic spec engine and modena dog box , it was nothing special , but to think you can build a car for £7k or even £10k I think is not achievable.

You would be better off buying a car for £10k -£12k and changing the bits to the spec you want.

I have a clio now , and thats running a standard engine , but reiger suspension and Sadev sequential gearbox , and this car owes me not far off £20k , its not a cheap sport by a long way !

And if your wondering why i'm up at this ungodly hour , i'm off rallying today as i'm competing on the Fat Albert stages near Trowbridge , so allow for a good alarm clock as well
The engine from your old car is in my workshop Ian, Roger managed to grab 1st when going up to 3rd, oooooooops,,,,,,,,,,,bang,,,,,,,,,,new short engine required

10k would build you a low spec clubmans car , a proper Group A car is totally different to any road based rally car ,no components are the same.

An ex Liatti Group A car for £10k? I've been had! I can only imagine it was a recce car.

I am lucky enough to have an ex Liatti Group A car, N555BAT, and whilst its not in immaculate condition (its still used!) it cost a lot more than that 4 years ago and I don't think it's devalued any.

L555REP (ex Sainz) has been restored and was recently valued at £125k... I know of two Prodrive Group A cars for sale at the moment, P843HWL is in Italy at £50k and Garry Jennings has his for sale on www.rallycarsforsale.net and also wants £50k having just sent £10,000 on an engine rebuild.

Obviously the most famous of them all is L555BAT, currently in a museum in Glasgow, is rumoured to be insured for well in excess of £250k...but then a Group A car cost nearly that from Prodrive when new!

Its the best advice you've had on here. and heres another bit.

No offence here but unless you are some megga car bulding natural born tallent @ 16years, A group a impreza OR any rally Impreza, is no mean feat even for a experienced builder, robbied is probably right on the parts alone @ £40k-50k but i can assure you you wont have all the skills to complete a car like this so out side help will have to be bought in. there is a reason why a new WRC/Group A impreza Is close to half a million£.

Then you have to run it @ 5-9mpg on a stage using race fuel @ apox £3+ a litre. £60 woth of oil in it every event £500 on tyres+ Engine service every season £6-10k brake pads £200 disks will be a easy £4-500 suspension @£6-10k+ thats asuming you wont crash it and @ 17yrs old you will!

If your budget is £10k, Spend £5k on a old 206-106 cup car or similar Fiesta etc and spend the rest on a season of fun. when you done in a year or 2 and you out grown it stick it back on the market re eveluate your situation.

Never said I was going to do it all myself mate, most of the work will be done myself but I have friends who are pro fabricators who have offered me help when I need it, plus ex-works mechanics offering help too. I know full well that I'll have to bring in outside men to do the likes of the wiring etc.

I know about running costs (but thanks for outlining them, couple of bits I'd underestimated), and it's fairly evident I'll bend it at some point. Running costs aren't a big deal for me, I know a few sponsors willing to help me out.

My budget is still 10k but for that I'm going to build a Ford Escort Mk2, I know for a fact one can be built & be competitive in its class for 10k. Cheers to anyone who gave me advice on the subject of the Impreza.

Did a Prodrive tour last year and they had 97 001 in for a full refurb (Colin Mcrae's 1997 WRC winning car), cost of in excess of 100k, but that car is a piece of history

Stupid question mate but why do you want to build one from scratch? You could buy 2 Ex Prodrive GPA cars for the price its going to cost you to build one and even then your not going to find all the correct GPA parts to build one.

ive worked for a few rally teams/works teams in the past. Ive done 6 bare metal refurbs on Ex prodrive GPA cars so know the work and cost envolved in doing just this.
This was over 7 years ago and even then parts were getting quite hard to find. 2 of the bigest problems your going to find is getting hold of a propper engine but guess you can get one built for ££££ but its going to be the gearbox and rear diff. People who have these are going to want mega money for them as you just cant get them anymore.

I wish you the very best of luck in this and hope you will put the build on here for us all to see.
