Now Ron
I shall be gentle with you being a mac noob but after this, you get no kid glove treatment
It is Mountain Lion or as we like to say 10.8
You mention upgrading from OSX but you tell us which version. I assume you have version Lion 10.7 if you have just bought a mac. If so then you qualify for a free upgrade (it is only £13 but you could spend that on moisturiser
)As for what benefits you would see from lets say Lion, as a noob user none, but TBH for that amount of money it is a no brainer
Cheers Swistopher
when I first switched the computer on, I did do some updates from the app store, so maybe I already have
I'm typing this from my phone do i'll have a look later, like you say say for £13 I might as well give it a go

You can always tell what version you have by going to the top left under the apple and selecting about this mac.
I've still not upgraded
One point of note, they have removed the "Web Sharing" preference pane from 10.8. Apache and the other bits are still there, but you'll need to use the command line (might be some scripts out there as well) to start / stop / restart apache.
I believe the comment was that if you wanted web server capabilities, get ML Server.
Not a massive problem, but it might catch people out. I wasn't aware of it until I was reading an article on 10.8, and I use the personal websharing side of things to run development versions of sites.

I've had terrible trouble with my email since I upgraded. Swiss will back me up.
And although it seems sorted now, I've had my aunt nagging me, saying she can't send emails to me, that they keep getting bounced back!

Well, turns out, my aunt has been putting the number '0' instead of the letter 'o' in my email address. Silly tart! She drove me scrofulous yesterday........5 emails, four texts, and four (or was it five? I was losing the will to live....... phone calls!).
Anyway.....(I haven't updated Swiss with this yet!), my gmail thingy was working for sending emails (after he'd fiddled with me remotely), but I then found out that I wasn't receiving replies to those emails. So, I went and changed my server option back to my O2, and entered 25 in the custom port box, and since then, (fingers crossed) it's been ok.
