Just got this by mail...Real or a **** take?

Take Down The Union Jack on May 20

Three versions of the Billy Bragg and The Blokes' single Take Down The Union Jack from the new album England, Half English, will be released on Cooking Vinyl on May 20. The price: £1.99 each.

Our aim? To launch the song to the top of the UK charts in time for the Queen's Golden Jubilee at the start of June. All profits go to the not-for-profit organisation the Living Wage campaign in London.

Why? If you are dismayed at all the fawning and grovelling surrounding the Jubilee celebrations and wonder why almost no dissenting view is heard, this campaign is for you.

If you are sick of pop impresarios using dubious techniques to dominate the singles charts, and just as importantly the radio waves, to the exclusion of anything else, then this campaign is for you.

If you think the minimum wage is not enough and want to help the Living Wage campaign force big employers to pay proper rates of pay, especially in expensive areas such as cities, then this campaign is for you.

What are we asking you to do? Buy the CD as soon as possible after launch day on May 20 in order to try and force the single into the UK pop charts. If possible, go into your local independent record store and try to pre-order it NOW. Encourage as many people as possible to buy the CD: tell them via email, a web site, in conversation – however you can. A Take Down The Union Jack microsite will be launched soon to help concentrate everyone's efforts. If you want to use any of the images of the single from the site, or the press release wording, you don't need permission from us, just copy and circulate.

Wink

Live in a country where you are only allowed to listen to records that Billy Bragg approves of? Not bloody likely!

"If you think the minimum wage is not enough and want to help the Living Wage campaign force big employers to put lots of people out of work so that they can afford to pay the remaining employees some artifically-inflated wage decided by a bunch of fourth-rate jumped up civil servants, especially in expensive areas such as cities, then this campaign is for you."

Carpet, yes democracy does mean power by the people, but ufortuantely there are only a few, probably none, nations in the world tha practice it. Why? Because it is impractical. This country is ruled by a party that polled less than 50% of the votes, so we are certainly not in control of our own destiny.

We can vote them out next time sure, but all that does is install another set of people who we have no control over for 5 years!

I am not a royalist by any means, but the Queen does work very hard, far harder than most of the people on here. And she cannot retire, she works until she dies.

She does not get to enjoy the enormous wealth she has like the rest of us would. She also has to pay the wages of the people who work for her (albeit not the police and such like).

I don't why people have such a problem withe the Queen. OK, she does get alot of money, but not as much as our CEO, and he retires for a life of leisure at the end of this month. He also doesn't get his private life pryed into all the time, when his relatives die he can mourn in private etc.

The tourism income they generate is probably not much, 'cos those suckers the Yanks would still come to look at the buildings anyway, but the Monarchy is what sets us apart from other nations. Do you really want to become like the US?

Geezer

P.S. I do think that she should pay inheritance tax on the civil list money she inherits, because it's just her wages at the end of the day.

Exclamation

Democracy, power to the people, the Queen?

All irrellevant these days, as we have surrendered ourselves almost totally to the EU

A few million uncollected "inheritance tax" will look minor compared to what we will HAVE to pay our faceless, unelected MASTERS in Brussels!!!!

Just been for a good thrash on my mountain bike - feelin' better for it.

Anyway, I had never thought of myself as 'republican'. Don't really mind a royal family. It's just that when people meet the Queen they always say:"ooh she's just like one of us..". So, if that's the case, my argument is that she (they) should pay tax - just like one of us.

20 million that they don't really need could go a long way somewhere else (health?)

Jeff, I respect your views too, don't mind a debate either, that's why I posted this, could do without the insults though

Who would I pefer, well, could give Chas a go I suppose...

R.

p.s. I don't think we need to be too loyal, after all one is German decent and the other is Greek!

Cool

Congratulations Carl you caught me out I was trying to disguise myself in the hope that I could move around freely in society without being recognised, but alas I was scuppered by a vigilant citizen like yourself
