You do understand that to be a Jew is to have a Jewish mother, don't you? You do get that it's an ethnicity as well as a tradition and a faith? One can't just become or stop being a Jew. Christopher Hitchens was Jewish.

I do not agree with that at all. Everyone is born a human, you are than referred to your nationality i.e British, born in Britain, American, born in America, African, born in Africa etc, you get the idea.

People are not linked by there religious background, you choose or more often the case, forced upon a religious belief, as daft as they all are.

Hmmm interesting one. In my mind anyone who converts to Judaism IS then a Jew. It really doesn't overly concern me, but i see "Jewish" in a different way to the other examples you've used.

You're both entirely welcome to think independently, but it's really not something about which one can have an 'opinion'. Being a Jew (as opposed to practicing Judaism) is matrilineal, now I don't know about you boys, but I didn't get to choose my mother. It's for this reason that it's quite possible to be a Jewish atheist - see: Christopher Hitchens or Carl Sagan etc. etc.

Well leaving aside the fact you decided not to do a bit of totting up as that would kind of make your theory look a little suspect how about we get rid of all threads mocking religion.... there is no rule saying NSR should partly be about taking the **** out of someone else's beliefs however bizarre they might seem to some of the less tolerant on here!

 

Why should religion be tolerated F1? What would you think if scientology swept across the country, with laws effecting everyone in the country, based on that religion?

Would you embrace the idea of it, ignore it and abide by the laws or speak up about it?

 

How is it suspect? It isn't a case of 'point scoring' and that was all I was trying to say. You were suggesting only one religion is subject to mocking, and that is point blank, not the case.

Maybe we should ban such conversations, although for the most part, threads aren't originally about mocking, they tend to have a discussion point, but you will always get certain comments made. I'm not sure they should be banned, as stupid remarks can easily be ignored, or if meant in humour, take it as meant. Also, people are entitled to an opinion, and how far do we take silencing them, just because we don't agree. No opinions will be changed if all we do is stop discussion.

Taking this a little further, for example, I'm not the skinniest person in the world and I often stumble on threads having a go at anyone above a size 10, should I remove all of them as they take the ****/verge on offensive? What about threads about people claiming benefits, they could be taken as offensive to someone in that position, even though comments may be directed at the career scroungers, people can generalise too much.

I may have gone on too much of a tangent here, but the point I'm getting at is NSR is full of various discussions, and amongst them, there will be threads or comments within, that may take the ****, or even offend, but where do we stop in terms of removing all of that? Why should it only apply to religious topics? If you think the place is dead now......It all depends on the person as to what topic or comment offends.

 

Well as I have asked several times, how do you think a Muslim coming to this board for the first time would feel given the plethora of fairly anti Muslim threads that were hanging around about 2 years ago. And now looking at this thread I could ask the same question as to how a Jew might feel although at least it is just one thread (see how the numbers adding up does matter).

I just think that when a thread degenerates into Muslim/Jew/gay/overweight/ etc. etc. bashing what is to be gained by leaving it hanging around?
