Stay away from anything with a Mazda badge and a diesel engine in it, petrols are great, diesels are shocking.
VAG 2 litre diesels can be a bit troublesome, the older 1.9 PD engines are good, for that reason (and having been in one) I would go for a Fabia Vrs.
Or an Impreza D (well this is a Subaru forum).

I sold my Hawkeye sti 3 months ago and got a MK6 VW Golf 2.0TDI Match 'bluemotion'. Have to say I am chuffed with it. Once you accept thats its not a scoob, it does everything well and is surprisingly quick for 140bhp diesel, the torque makes it a bit of fun. The 'bluemotion' bit wont make any difference on how it drives over a standard 2.0TDI, the figures are the same, it just means it has resistant tyres, and energy recovery system fed from the brakes back to the battery and a most annoying stop/start thing. All that results in no road tax and combined of 50 odd mpg. I would avoid the 1.6tdi bluemotion as that was a bit lethargic.
I will still be putting an older scoob back in the garage at some point soon, but for day to day, I cant fault the golf, particularly for quality.

I was really hoping to like the 1.6 but couldn't face the austerity of it.
The match is a nice proposition, a nice place to be. Golfs are quite conservative cars but I like that now, they are the hatches for the disconcerting Gentleman.
I'm just glad I didn't get a Honda oil burner.

330D has to be a strong contender since there is a range of ages, prices, body styles and the engine has always been class leading in many respects including economy and CO2 vs performance. It even sounds good.

A 330d is definitely a good option... they tick a lot of boxes. But I assume from what the OP has said he wants a BMW AUC, you'll struggle to achieve that (certainly one with reasonable specification) within the budget unless the upper end becomes a little elastic by a couple of grand IMO.
Providing the looks don't offend you and you're not needing serious load lugging ability then a used 123d M Sport is a fairly good option too and comes within budget from BMW dealerships... 204bhp & 295lb/ft as standard, ability to get ~260bhp and ~400lb/ft with basic remap/DPF removal and most come with reasonable specification.
I'd be surprised if there was much more than a few hundred quid in PX value between dealerships. However, I heard an advert on the radio here saying the local VW Dealer was selling Golf's for a huge discount just now; so with a bit of salesman jiggery pokery on the figures then it may appear as though you're getting a very strong PX value for the R32.
Cheers,
Grant
