Benefits stat: (source our evening paper tonight...)

1980 benefit spend = £24billion
2000 benefit spend = £59billion
2012 benefit spend = £115.2billion

No wonder we are bankrupt.... How the hell can it virtually double every 20 years????

To be fair you should check that change against the change in price of a pint of milk

Also we have far more pensioners these days

£115 billion barely buys a decent 4 bed family home in Kensington & Chelsea

If anyone is to blame it is those who set up and then operated a system that allowed this vile man to father all those children, live with two 'wives' in a council house whilst claiming 60k in benefits and not looking for work!

90% of those who claim are genuine, probably more but some aren't and instead of dealing with just those screwing the system over the government are using it as an excuse to treat everyone as potential philpotts.

Blair and Brown along with their cabinets should have been in the dock alongside them!

Totally agree. This guy was in the spotlight long before he went and murdered his kids. The warning signs were there. Yet nobody in authority did anything about it.

Easy way out for them may be, but I'd rather that than risk anymore children suffering at the hands of that evil, twisted individual.

What sickens me more is what this numpty said today:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-22025035

A debate? A f&cking debate? And they wonder why voters are reducing in numbers.

Debate? too right. No debate about it. People like this should not be allowed to use children as a means to gain an income via benefits.

What sickens me further is the press and Labour's counter attack, which supports the use of using children as means to gain a income on benefits. Wrong. Very wrong. If Philpots has no moral compass, then the press and Ed ***** has even less: This guy didn't have 10+ kids because he "loved" them, they were pawns. How can the likes of Ed ***** sit there and defend him?

Whilst Philpots is a extreme case; there are people spawning children without the means to support them, some of whom do it with the pure intention to get better funding and housing. The issue has never even been acknowledged let alone addressed.

38% of this is state pensions + another 11% or £78bn (in total) for pensioners which seems fair for those who have paid in/contributed, amusing they have and not remained on benefits for their working lives. Given they have contributed i hope you do not plan to take money from people living on state pensions?

The chart makes interesting reading.

Seems sad and indeed cruel that the government are using the deaths of children to try to make their point.

We should be looking at foreign aid and how much we give away and to whom.
We should see the split of benefits being given to immigrants to see what sort of impact this is having.
We should be paying benefits to migrants and immigrants until they have paid in for at least 5 years.
We shouldn't allow the likes of philpott to lie off of the state but remembering that not all those who are on benefits are like him.
We should be looking at why we give benefits in the form of cash rather than vouchers/payment card requiring fingerprint id that can only be used to pay for food/clothes etc in a secure way to people who are drug addicts, alcoholics or proven.
they cannot manage money - by a secure method.

There are a lot of things that can be done to improve things rather than treating those on benefits as on homogeneousness of lying, cheating *******s.

We should be looking at how and what out taxes are being spent on but is a government full of the morally corrupt and remembering back to the expenses scandal cheating, thieving liars, the best people to do this?

What they call an "elephant in the room" I believe.
It bit of a hot potato for the politicians as it strikes at the heart of the Welfare state which (along with the NHS, BBC and Education system) we have over the years been brainwashed into thinking is one of our country's greatest achievements.
And maybe it is.
Either way we are stuck with it (them).
IMO, the problem here is that this is a position we feel it our duty not to question (in other words - it is a dogma).
I believe it is our civic duty to do just the opposite - trouble is, that makes me a fascist
Not sure if it is a vote winner either.
