You only get one life mate, so it is what you make of it.
I left the Army 13 years ago, and moved into a right **** hole, as it was all i could afford, 3 bedroom semi for 35k at the time.
I moved in first while me and a couple of mates sorted the place out.
2 nights in and the fun started, 2am, got up for a wee and found the local gangsta trying to get out with my TV.
Shout the mates down, gave him a fookin good pasting, and tied him to a chair in the garage with ratchet straps, and gagged and blindfolded the *******.
Went back to bed!
6 hours later we let him go, and never ever had a single problem since, in-fact they go out of their way to help, always hold the shop door open for the wife and stuff like that.
Do/get whatever you want when you want, and don't let scum stop you

I'd only moved into my neighbourhood for a couple of months and a couple of teens tried to car jack me at my doorstep. I ended up chasing them down the road and they never returned to our area again.
Even nice areas, which are often quiet are potential targets for robbers. As a robber, you'd rather me in a quiet, undisturbed area than a very built up busy one.

Honestly as said, restless sleep ain't worth a scooby, in fact no car is worth the worry mate, but if u do but it then, get a reliable aftermarket alarm, a tracker, and CCTV with motion detection and recording 24/7, and decent house insurance, but really if u live in an area that is rough and u fear the wife and kids are in danger DON'T BUY THE CAR, THERE MORE IMPORTANT THAN 4 WHEELS

I don't know if there's such a thing as a battery powered baby monitor these days, but I used to have a mains powered transmitter in my garage when I had a bike years back, with the receiver by our bed.
You could hear anything going on in the garage in the night (even the local hedgehog having a pee outside), and at the first sign of trouble, I'd send the wife straight down to investigate....
Joking apart, I think you're making the right decision to leave the car and try to move. You'll always be able to get the car in future, and it will probably be cheaper to buy and insure then too.
