how do you explain a hawkeyes classed as s12,s then? cus i make that version 9.

Version 1 was 1994 MY, Version 6 was 2000 MY, earliest Hawkeye was 2006 MY.
Therefore on numbering a Hawkeye would be a Version 12, if STI's were still numbered like that.
That's my take on it anyway.

well if the last classic was v6. v7 bug eye. v8 blob. v9 hawk.
wheres the 3 missing numbers come from. im getting really confused lol

No confusion, there would have been a version 7 STI but that would have been an MY01, the version 8 an MY02, the version 9 an MY03 etc.
Subaru only produced 6 variants up to the end of the classics, MY94, MY96, MY97, MY98, MY99, MY00.

One of the reasons they dont use the numbering any more
the other is the differences in the different markets (USDM, EUDM, JDM).

My engine tuner today confirmed its a 2009 v9 rear thrust block. and hes a very sweet man
