This is a great thread - mostly due to the very real shared pain of making the horrible decision to get rid of our Impreza.
I work as a doctor but due to an upcoming wedding, new mortgage (£1100 a month) and change of hospital with a £300 a month commute, I found myself test driving Skoda Octavia VRS's at the weekend.
Truth is, with my financial situation having changed as it has since I bought the car and the fact that I'd loose so much overall that it is a horribly difficult decision to make. I'd be left driving a rust bucket if I sold. I'd never be able to live with the 'I wish I hadn't ever sold it' feeling either.
I don't know what my long term solution will be. I just hope that those who have been made redundent etc find themselves back into work soon. Especially if you have kids to support.

I wouldn't be able to afford a car at all if I lived completely to the end of my means each month.

For me it's like everything in life, you have to cut your cloth to suite your income, i don't drive mine everyday but thats because i'm in croatia and the car is in england at the moment, but when i am there i drive it most days but not very far so the fuel is not an issue and i do all the servicing myself on all my cars as i have always done since my first car at the age of 17.
But saying that we do have a cheap runabout as i like bangernomics, as my general opinion on any car is that they are expensive to run no matter what you buy weather it be a bmw or a micra, so for day to day hacking around and long journeys it's the rover 25 and for fun it's the subaru but i'm a petrol head and if i can't have at least one thing in my life that i enjoy then whats the point of living and working just to exsist.

It is at the moment - I'm very fortunate to still be in that position. If much else changes, the decision might be made for me.

if i didnt only use it for work then it would be a push (mainly for the cost of petrol), but that was the decission when it was purchased. i hope never to be in the situation that the car would have to be sold. (crosses fingers)
