I'm looking at a set of heads at the moment but i'm very confused how to tell the V3 std heads from the STI one's, any markings on either the head casing or on the cams

Thanks Jme,
I'm not sure if its "*****" or stupidity. Last summer i got sick of parking in my road, so without knowing the first thing about drives i paid £50 for a licence for a dropped kerb, dug out about 10 tonne of mud and travelled most weekends to pick up broken bricks and paving slabs. At one house while i was clearing rubble a guy offered me type 1 for £10 per tonne (no questions asked) which is usually £30+Vat. £90 and a whacker plate later and my drive was done for less than £200. My neighbour then told me she'd paid £3k for her's and much preffered mine.
I guess I'm trying to say i love jumping in at the deep end, as long as i take my time on the build fingers crossed i should be ok.

Well small update, Realstreet avenue is now not an option because of the tax i'd have to pay importing. I think i'll be going for some CP Piston's from Advanced Automotive....

Clean up slowly slowly getting there....

Anyone does this themselves? What a nightmare! how time consuming is it lol!.

Ok so confession time, i'm worried i've buggered the block. When i was struggling to pull the block apart i remember someone who will remain nameless saying "Sometimes you have to just wiggle a screwdriver in to pull it apart"....
What was i thinking!!!!!

Does not look good at all from the bottom pic. If i've ****ed it i'd rather know now and look for another block and put this down to experience.
There's similar on the clutch/flywheel sides but as these aren't filled with oil i can't see them being a problem.

That will dress up ok, use a big oilstone on the flat surfaces to get rid of the high spots, at least you have'nt prized it apart by the oil gallery passages, damaging the o ring locations, or prized it apart at one end only, bursting the dowel out the casting, like some blocks i have had in for rebuild.

Just don't do it again.

Well, time to strip and partially clean the inlet manifold.

To this, not great....

The mrs also wanted the kitchen re-floored whilst i was off, which was ok until moving the fridge around one too many times obviously took its toll late Wednesday night.

Lol its cool, I'd rather go that little bit further for future-proofing. I was looking at CP pistons from Advanced Automotive and my paypal is looking tempting now, maybe a bit more saving for those sexy-looking Crower rod's as well as Wiseco piston's.

Whilst i'm waiting i'm tempted to mirror polish the manifold.

You can also pay them over the phone phone up there customer services

This is easier so they can leave with neighbours

But real street is a 1st class service will be using again soon

I wish i'd never started that thread i expected a general concencus of around £60 like you said but ended up with most people quoting near enough £200!

Advanced automotive have cranks with acl bearings for good prices so I'll probably get one from them.
On a side note ever polished an inlet manifold lol?

Ok make a start following this guide sort of...
http://www.poleringsguide.se/english/

First filing down the horrible forge marks right along the front of the manifold,

And on to the flappy sanding wheel...

Slowly getting there...

I'll be doing the same i think, just need to bump up paypal a bit more. I'll go for Crower as the set only works out £30 more expensive and although a lot of people seem to use manley rods and are very happy the crowers are apparently good for 125BHP per rod. I'm not looking forward to using the Wiseco pistons as i hear they are noisey when cold and i'll be nervous enough when i first turn the key.

I've read some pretty stark warnings of sandblasting manifolds recently. Although this will need some serious washing through after I'm done as well. It's a labour of love, like the project as a whole really but it will hopefully make it that little bit sweeter.

I was working in a brass company and i use a sandblasting machine for brass and believe me,it needs 15 minutes to remove the red paint (it was painting with a heat resistand spray). The only thing i do was to put bolts in every hole to dont make any damage and then i washing it with gas only and here is the result...

http://s714.photobucket.com/albums/w...hoto-00562.jpg

anyway,you do great job
