My remapped 535d has 750nm of torque...

I have had 4 scoobies, 2 m5's and in this day and age diesel is the way to go forward...I think..

It was Clarkson testing a then new (2004/5) BMW 535d and being fairly impressed with it. He then started comparing it with the petrol 545i and his enthusiasm seemed to swing more towards the petrol.
A race around the track saw the 545i easily nail the 535d.
This really surprised me as from things i read and heard, i thought it would have been the other way around!

I know those 545i are really cheap now, so are they that much worse in economy?
It's a good point that's constantly asked. The 545i is slightly faster, a bit thirstier especially round town but is a fair bit cheaper so there's definitely a balance depending how many miles you do and what roads. The 550i is even faster with similar...ish fuel consumption but they're priced about the same as the 535d.
If you're seriously considering a 5xx I would get on to the BMW forums and do some research and then try and drive them, it's a close call.

Here's a few I use.

I am not sure what the point of a diesel with such bad mpg is, i had a 530d for a bit but it was pretty souless and dull compared to the old 5 series. I have been told that the 535 is a much better car but again why bother with a diesel with such bad mpg . Especially given the price of diesel now. ?

I don't think a petrol car with similar performance as a remapped 535d would at all be fuel efficient - even with the current diesel prices.

Once the extra cost of buying the car in the first place is taken into account, the extra price of Diesel and the frankly quite mental price of a Diesel pump if one fails, I am not really sure there is much of a saving.

Ok, we know straight line performance can be done, 335d, TTRS, GTR but I think those cars seem to be bought specifically by people for ***** waving, buy them as they are good cars but dont make straight line performance the main or only criteria.
