Not necessarily. I was in school wit,h and then worked with a guy who unfortunately died of heart failure at 42. What I didn't know was that he had suffered severe depression for many years but had kept it well hidden from those who worked with him.

With respect Chip your mate wasn't in the public eye or a celebrity though was he. You can't keep that kind of thing hidden from the media.

 

It's more than likely there was going to be a newpaper story, similar to the Giggs one, and he knew he was going to loose his wife, kids and job. (Speculation of course)

Assuming that was the case, how do you know what you'd be thinking if you were about to loose everything that was dear to you.

 

I still wouldn't top myself over it as that is just causing extra misery to my loved ones.

In all honesty though,if you weren't in some completely mad state of mind,how could you

1.Do that knowing you will never see your kids again

2.Do that knowing your kids will think 'why did dad do that to us?'

You really have to have lost the plot IMO

 

Easy to say that, but if it happened different people react in different ways.

Of course most wouldn't do it, but i don't think anyone would like to be in that position.

True,its just got to be something incredibly dramatic/life changing or ruining to extinguish yourself not caring about your loved ones

 

Well I've always considered other people's feelings and always have done, family or not. It's a trait that seems to be missing in people these days. For me it would never cross my mind even if I had lost everything.

its weird tho, you dont (hear about anyway) of homeless people, prostitutes (forced into it ones) etc commiting suiced,its always well off people who lose it all or rich period.

even in local rags you hardly read about the ones i mention topping themselves

 

How? I thought all of those with whatever issue they had was common knowledge? I certainly heard about some of their issues via the media.

I am one of the most normal people you could meet IMO. Just a normal, happy go lucky guy.

About 10 years ago my ex walked out on me with her/our kid (that's another story), i lost my job, and i got quite bad depression. It's amazing the things that go through your head in that situation.

 

Yep I've been there to. Point is we may have got very depressed about it, but we didn't then try and top ourselves and let others deal with the aftermath. We might have thought about it sure, but you have to keep your chin up and deal with it, rather than just giving up and having no regard for the people who have to deal with it.

 

In Neil Lennon's book he admits to being a clinical depressive.
He also says that depression is rife throughout football, and players you'd never think of as having it, being affected.

 

Everyone is different though of course. All i know is he must have been in a dark place, and couldn't have been nice at all.

Of course it's selfish that 2 kids have lost their dad, but enless we know what happened it's hard to pass judgement.

 

Well quite. Some may call it selfish, and I understand that perspective, others that the act is indicative of the torment that the individual is suffering - suffering so extreme that release from it trumps the knowledge that the people you love most will be left behind. Incredibly sad.

 

No one is passing judgement, what has happened is terrible. But for me I can't be sympathetic to anyone who commits suicide and leaves kids behind.

You do hear about (or read about) of such here n' there. You just don't care enough for them, because they aren't even worth jacksh!t in your eyes; dead or alive. There's plenty of suicide among the underworld, underclass, and the working class. It's not a royal disease just for the rich, famous, talented and the intelligent. Its just that the suicides among the common ones aren't worth making headlines for the newspapers. Today's local news, tomorrow's chip paper. The ripple effects are equally grave for the close ones from any class. Actually, graver for the non-rich, for they don't even have the passed person's money or fame left to be comforted with. Just grief, vacuum and struggle for years to come; causing mental health issues for the surviving ones. Suicide is an unfortunate thing. But so is living half-dead for some. That's is why some end it all. Not that they should. If there are reasons to die, there are reasons to live, too. But **** happens.

Whether he ws a road sweeper or an over paid premadonna, suicide is an awful thing.

 

I don't see it as selfish for one reason only, for someone to take their life like that they have had to have had a complete mental breakdown and not be of sound mind. They haven't just thought **** it can't put up with this anymore and topped themselves as it's just not that easy. They have to have completely lost their mind and when that happens selfishness does not come into it.

 

It is selfish. If you are that manically depressive to the point where you have a split personality and have no control, then you go and seek medical help/therapy.

 

Not if they have in some way flipped out. You've even said it in your post "no control". If they have no control then they aren't exactly able to ask for help are they otherwise they'd be in control of their actions.

 

The majority of the comments in this thread are laughable and the opinions of people without a bloody clue, I just pray no one suffers any sort of break down at any point within their 'perfect lives.'

One in four people within the UK will suffer from some type of mental health issue at some point within their life!

I agree but I was trying to keep it in context with Speed's situation without being disrespectful to him.

It's tragic. He was a lovely looking bloke and seemed to have everything in life, most people want. Seems that was not enough.
It does take guts to take your life. I couldn't do it, no matter how bad things become.
A Lady I work with has serious depression problems. You really have no idea how bad it is until you see it "first hand"
My brothers wife is suffering from Cancer and there is not much more they can do. My brother is in the serious depression state and I am lost at what to do to help him.
Guess work on why Gary Speed did what he did, may have many reasons.

 

Probably That's the problem with open forums, speaking your mind n all that.
