First Review I could find says this:-
Verdict
Apple's iPad 2 is faster, lighter, thinner and better than its predecessor. But, if you want a tablet with Flash support and greater flexibility, an Android device may be a better bet.

By the way my LapTop cost £150 brand new!! I'm not known for being silly with my money!!

"Although we love the iPad 2's simplicity, it can prove a serious drawback in a few situations. For example, you can swap between two apps that are running at the same time by double-clicking the home button, but you can't look at the apps side by side in two different windows. That means that the iPad can struggle with any task more complex than surfing the Web.
Let's say you want to write an email. If you simply create the message and start typing, everything works like a charm. But, when you want to do more, like paste in some text from your calendar or add a photo, you must engage in an app-swapping session that can make your head swim. Also, some tasks that are common on a full-sized computer, like adding an email attachment, just can't be accomplished.
Even copying and pasting text is annoying on the iPad 2. You have to hold your finger on text to highlight it. You can then drag some tiny markers around to highlight the exact text you want -- in theory. It's often impossible to get this process right on Web pages because of their HTML-formatted text. Even when it works perfectly, you need the concentration of a monk to tap and drag the cursor where you want it"
Oh, Dear .... doesn't look too good for the cost of it .......

I fancied a new car, so I walked in to the local Ferrari dealer and looked at the 458, very nice bit of kit, BUT get this £173,132!!
The Ferrari is stuck with just two seats, but for less money the Ford Galaxy has 5 seats!!
Also the Galaxy is expandable with 2 extra seats, the Ferrari is fixed with the number of seats you buy it with.
I just dont get Ferrari - Sorry.

I don't like tablets for reading. I was sat next to someone on a 'plane on Monday who had a kindle and I asked to have a play (with the kindle ).
It is much easier to hold, the text is much easier on the eye and it is more like the experience of reading a book. Although not really there yet as it is still a piece of fragile (ish) electronics that'll get scratched, damaged if you drop it etc...
iPad 2 vs Samsung Galaxy Tab ... mmmm .... they are certainly not half the price and I prefer the iPad (although I prefer Android (Samsung Galaxy) over the iPhone).

I have a kindle and love it - several colleagues have both ipads and kindles. i.e. I'm puzzled why you're comparing an e-ink book reader with a glorified laptop - you want eye strain and a massive heavy book get an ipad. The kindle is great value and the best of the e-readers right now (amazon's range of titles and pricing is way ahead of waterstones etc). The guys who have ipads have enthused about apps for this and that but all now use it for web browsing and playing angry birds. Woo.
The kindle does do general internet browsing which is ok but it's not great at it, but that's not what it's for. It is brilliant at what it's designed for. It can be damaged if dropped hard enough but I've used mine almost every day for a year (no cover - I don't like the idea of adding needless weight and it's usually in my suit jacket pocket so the screen's protected when not in use anyway).

One year of iPad ownership and I've used it every single day I've owned it. My laptop is now virtually redundant and has gone from everyday usage to maybe once a month now.
However, if your looking for something to primarily be used to read books then I think the kindle is probably better.

it's just as important to research what you'll consume on any device these days; apps, publications, books, media, etc.
no point paying less for the tech, when there's actually less content too.
as for reading. get an ebook. no contest in terms of eye comfort.

I am really surprised at you Pete, I mean taking the list price as being what you would look to pay.
I recently bought an iPad 2 (16GB Wi-Fi) as I don't need a 3G model and 16GB is more than enough for my requirements; but I paid £350 including delivery for mine - brand new, sealed box and unregistered from the UK.
It is without doubt one of the best pieces of tech that I have bought recently, although not quite up to the level of the iPhone 4 in terms of overall use given.
I have never even been into an Apple Store as I don't really want the hard/soft sell, I just buy Apple on the basis that they are the best and easiest products to use within their sector.
Plus if you are planning on buying a Galaxy Tab then I would hurry up because if Apple have their legal challenge granted in the Dutch courts Samsung will have to withdraw all their Galaxy products (mobile and tablet) from sale.

I use a 7" Galaxy Tab for reading (using Kindle app and store) and that works really well. It replaced my Sony Reader and my 10" netbook for 95% of things.
Works great as an alternative to a Kindle except in bright sunlight where it fails (not a biggy for me). However, you can read in bed with the lights off and turn the brightness right down within the Kindle app. Nice. It's light enough to hold in one hand for long periods as well. iPad fails on this point as does the 10.1 Galaxy Tab, just too big and heavy for long reading sessions.
Think the 7" Tab is under £250 these days and has just had the Gingerbread update so issues with the browser have been solved. Oh, does Flash as well ;-)

my wifes got a sony e-reader, ive got a kindle, and the kindle betters it in every way. Even the wife admits it! the screens better( the sony's a 6" touchscreen, don't know what the 5" versions like) its lighter and ergonomically its more pleasant to use. and the process to get books on the sony is much more convoluted than getting it onto the kindle.
At the moment, imo its hard to see past the kindle if your after an e-book.
