Question The Apple Store

A new Apple Store has opened in our Town ......

I'm looking for an e-book reader for her indoors.

But, I have been taken with the new Tablets .... the Samsung Galaxy is a nifty piece of kit IMO - so, thinking why pay £269 for a SONY eReader which has no Wi-Fi and is Black and White only - when a Samsung Galaxy does everything the Sony does and is around the same price?

The Kindle is OK .... but not as slick and tactile as the Sony or Samsung.

Anyway - why not an iPad2 I thought?

So, I walk into the Apple Store to look at the iPad2 .... very nice piece of kit - BUT, get this, £479 for the same spec as the Samsung which is £200 cheaper!!

The Samsung is expandable ... the iPad is fixed with the memory choice you make on purchase!! WTF!!??

I just don't get it Apple - sorry.

I don't either, seems to be a bit of a craze/fad to me. For such a tech freak like me I have to say that Apple is one of the few things that I just have not been caught be. Apple and 3D TV. No thanks.

I was struck by the people who were in the Apple Store .... it seemed like I had walked into some Religous Cult or something.

It really was like the Osmonds and the Walton Family rolled into one shop ... it was vomit inducing tech candy to be perfectly honest with you, a little bit creepy - you know what I mean?

Friendly enough, but a bit 'in your face' .... I was even invited to a "Demonstration" given by 'Tarquin'. I stayed and listened to the acne riddled geek for about 3 minutes, when he said "OK, Guys, lets go around the table and introduce each other" and I looked at the people sat around getting a hard-on over the prospect of playing with an iPad - I decided that this was no place for a real man ...... and left!

I suppose it appeals to geeks, women and men who bat a certain way ... but it made me feel rather ill.

I've remarked about this before; it is cult like, everyone is a bit too friendly and 'nice'. Nobody working there is over 25 either. It's like a creche with everyone in blue polo shirts.

OTOH though it is a much better experience than going in somewhere like Currys or PC world with minimum wage serfs drudging about.

Get a windows7 touch pad, you can get a mountain of free software as well as the ability of using it as a "real pc". wide browser choice, compatible with everything on the web (flash and so on)

Wait for the $99 HP Touchpad firesale start over here, then pick up a bargain.

However if you don't buy an iPad you'll quickly find out why all other manufacturers are having no fun at all trying to sell tablets. The tablet market is booming - but only if it's an iPad.

There's another huge difference between LCD based tablets and e-Ink based ebook readers. If it's an ebook reader you want then wait for the new Kindle (possibly colour and/or touch-screen) or pick up a current one from the Amazon refurb store for a bargain price - either way get the 3G version as you get free 3G access thereafter (inc browsing).

To be honest, the wife thought it was 'really nice' ..... but that's because the Smurfs in Blue were only about 16 years old and dribbling down their front while they spewed the corporate vomit inducing statements. And she is post Menopausal and in Mothering mood!!

Yes, that's the idea ..... now, I may be giving my stupidity in this area away here, but - what is Android? I see 2.1 and 2.2 ..... what runs Windows7?

She wants to listen to music while reading .... I know the Kindle has a MP3 Player in the experimental area of the unit - but it ain't no SONY in music terms.

The Samsung Tablet even has two speakers on the bottom and can be expanded with MicroSD Cards ....

I fancied a new car, so I walked in to the local Ferrari dealer and looked at the 458, very nice bit of kit, BUT get this £173,132!!

The Ferrari is stuck with just two seats, but for less money the Ford Galaxy has 5 seats!!

Also the Galaxy is expandable with 2 extra seats, the Ferrari is fixed with the number of seats you buy it with.

I just dont get Ferrari - Sorry.

but that's a type-R not a diesel.

It's not overpriced if you can afford it surely

People have different tastes. I prefer Heinz beans some people prefer Tesco Value.

Either way Both buyers will be happy.

I'm not sure you're aware pete but if the apple store crew bother you theres a online shop

In as far as you can use it with the Kindle's browser and to download eBooks, yes.

Free 3G access... for ever, and wherever.

That Type R looks the same as my Type S ...... lovely, isn't it?

Yes, the iPad is impressive .... but, and this is the thing, it's no better than the Samsung Tablet at £200 less. Not in feel and operation anyway - unless someone can say otherwise?
