Andy..
I hate you... Your making me seriously consider this!!, Whats your air filter off and wheres the maf, or are the pictures just cr@p
I feel a bit silly, re-reading your post as its obvious how you have held it in now... Think Ill take the turbo off when I do the up pipe and downpipe...
Can you think of any alternatives for making the spacers out of?

Pictures look a lot better... Worrying thing is I have some sheets of abspestos (sp?) so I could do this... Just unsure about loosing the power steering... How heavy is it without the fluid?

I know andy is going to say stop being soft... I reckon if we change to 98/99+ manifold then we could keep pwr steering...
Ideas... (Only thing is Ill have to make a new manifold... doh)

yeah, was thinking about the later and taller manifold, but if so, will still make some thin insulating spacers like andy has.
didnt realise the p/s moved on the later model, not seen a piccy

Yes the PS is still at the same side on later models, the air inlet squashes past the side of it. Someone already suggested moving PS to the other side ???
Try it without PS first, you may like it ? Take the belt off and be sure to drain all the oil at the rack or it will be heavy as hell as you fight against the hydraulic presure !
I can drive my car harder now as I have more feel for what the front grip is. With the PS it is FAR too light and lacks feedback.
I've got a spare bit 10mm thick high temp plastic if you (David/Ian) want it ?

Yeah Yeah Yeah, Gimme Gimme Gimme...
Power steering cant go other side on mine as thats where the alternator is going, however some nissans have the power steering pump mounted on the back of the alternator... but these may be too deep...

PS...
I allways thought the car felt a bit vaigue on the front... I also think it dives a bit under hard breaking, say 100+ down to 60, feels a bit unsettled whilst doing... like back end is going light... might be just me... but when I had the abs switched off it seem to want to swap ends.... but thats another thread..
getting solid drop links , uprated antirollbar, and some slicks next week... New gear lever turned up... ready to make quickshift.. so might do that tommorow...

The later power steering pump has a smaller wedge shaped reservoir, which allows the pipe to go past it. I think that simply using it would allow enough room for a good pipe dia. Using the Inlet manifold from a later car would be slightly more difficult on some cars. The TPS uses 3 wires instead of 4 on the older cars. And sits on the opposite side, so simply swapping TPS isnt an easy option as it would be rotating the wrong way. it may be a simple connection job, if anyone can elaborate on what the 4 wires do?
The coolant bottle is also relocated on the newer type, with the metal reservoir... plus point there, it gets rid of the sh1tty plastic on that always falls apart.

no, you can see from the pics that the hacksaw is 240v... Anybody know where to get power hacksaw blades from? think there just less than a foot long... need some new steel and aluminium ones...
I didnt do it as I thought it would be nice to see how its done rather than your approach... just the finished product!

Surely if you move the bracket downwards, ie closer to the pivot point, you will need to move the gear lever more to select? The subaru gear lever pivots at the bottom, doesnt it? Another option is to try and get a second hand sti selctor, as these are of slightly shorter throw than the normal linkage.

Steve's right, you need to move the bracket up. I moved mine up by approx 20 mm. Any higher and the link bar fouls the tunnel.
Worthwhile mod though, stirs the box quicker Just as well as I'm into 5th in only 8.1 seconds from standstill shifting at 7k
