There is 700bhp in there all day.
Its even evident from the torque curve that its been artificially limited, of course the question is, "why?".

I cant wait to get my hands on one and get into the ECU and have a root around. Valvetronic is the future.

There are plenty of sensible answers to this ie longevity of the engine, gearbox strength etc. However the exciting answer is that there are rumours that BMW themselves will offer an official 'performance package'. This would mean that they stay ahead of the game when AMG and Audi bring out their answer and that they don't have to contend with all the non official tuning that is bound to happen.

If you look at the engine side by side with the X5/X6M engines on which it is based you can see that it has quite a lot of modification especially in terms of cooling. After all that they have only got 5 BHP extra out of it. Something doesn't add up, they didn't need to spend all that time/money if all they wanted was an extra 5 BHP for marketing reasons.

There seems, as you have said, to be a lot of untapped potential built into that engine

Btw, the price of the new M5 in Germany will be 102,000 euros basic. So that would be circa £85k?!! At least £7.5k of extras will be needed so price will be well over £90k. Way too much for me I'm sad to say........

Absolutely, and as soon as I figure out how the valvetronic calibration works I will be finding out what happens when we wind the valve lift back up at high revs.

If we are lucky its only been limited by the torque limiters, that will mean the job will only take days instead of months.

I am thinking a little more outside the box than the standard sort of limitations. (Although a manufacturer will normally limit torque and not BHP if they are worried about transmission strength.)

I am thinking more along the lines of the valvetronic or direct injection limitations. Its all pretty new stuff for a production car but certainly shouldn't be a problem given we are only looking at a production output of 69ftlb and 70bhp peaks per 550cc cylinder and we wouldn't normally start to worry about high speed physical integrity until we exceed around 100ftlb peak and 100bhp peak*.

The very high compression should be a help at high revs not a hindrance as the VE is bound to fall off up there, but it may well limit outright low speed peak torque capability as we still have the dreaded detonation to contend with, but its not like she hasn't already got enough torque anyway.

EGT's will be interesting as there cant be much air around those damned headers so it may need to run very rich to control the thermals, but that is a function we can easily automate in the ECU since it will certainly monitor EGT directly and control it via boost/spark/fuel trims.

Roll on getting one here to play with.

*assuming the same reciprocal speeds of course
