The Jap heads have AVCS (including the WRX ) so you will have difficulty running them unless you rewire the TGV's and use an aftermarket ECU......

Mine went at 301bhp!

Must admit if I was the OP I'd leave as is, but if doing more it may be as well to stick an 18G, 20G or similar turbo on, remap, then start saving for the likley gearbox replacement! Gbox won't cope with that power but engines normally do.

With 18G should manage 360-380bhp whilst not being too laggy. 20G is more laggy on 2.0 block.

Consider circumstances! I had never thought twice about getting a subaru until I was offered mine in part ex for my Mondeo ST220. Nothing to do with not being able to afford the STi. The chance came up and I fancied a change so I took it. This is just my own path in to scooby ownership.

You people make it sound like wrx owners are paupers
When I bought mine it was because I couldn't afford the extra few grand for an STi, or double the insurance cost, but now I'm in a similar boat to those of you facing the modify or swap debate. Apparently now I'll pay the same insurance whether it's my WRX or an STi so I've been faced with a dilema - modify the WRX which I know but which has done 100k, or swap for a lower mileage STi with unknown history. I've pretty much decided that from now on the Scooby is a track car so my Scooby guru is suggesting I stick with it and fit an STi turbo and intercooler, decat it and improve the breathing which should take it to around 300bhp, but what when I want more power? I already have the STi Brembos fitted and am planing some serious suspension and tyre upgrades to improve the handling on track.

Ah yes the old, poor mans impreza.

Before i bought my wrx i also had a test drive in an sti and although it was quicker, it was too firm and too many gear changes for my liking.

And as it was going to be a work vehicle in which i would be doing around 1000 miles a week, i did not fancy having my back teeth replaced every couple of months or peeing blood from the constant pounding that my kidneys would have to endure.

I also knew that with a few cheap mods i would be up to the same power,so i opted for the wrx and spent £1500 on mods and hey presto 275 bhp and a 3k saving ish moral of the story, there is more than one way to skin a cat.

On the other hand two years after i sold the wrx i wanted a weekend / track car so opted for the sti type r as immo its the best tool for that job.

It's not all about who has the bigger wallet, and lets face it if the sti mines better than yours, iv'e got more money than you brigade had any real dosh they probably would not be seen dead in a subaru

Pretty much same boat as me. I wanted a newage and my budget meant bugeye wrx. As mines a second car if it grenades its not too much of a problem. If I let my head rule I'd find a way of getting an sti but lets face it with cars you normally let your heart rule! Thats why I'd probably choose to tune my wrx if I decide I want a bit more poke after all its the getting there that counts!
