Plus running rich too! Hopefully the root cause can be determined and the mystery of the failure known once and for all.

Kudos to Rich for taking on the strip down and diagnosis.

Si, any ideas what spec your going for next?

Yeah big up to Richy for getting dirty with it As for spec Deano - I.m not sure, will have to see what is salvageable in the end - would like it strong enough to support Bob's last Map at least........

Damn and blast'! Gutted for u it's not looking to be a simples job, on the (slightly plus) side there do seem to be quite a few engines about fs, might work out cheaper to try and get a decent low mileage ond maybe?doez it have to be anything special what with her being an auto si? Hope it all works out for you bud

I know never rains but it pi55es down Rob as far as I know any engine will go in it's just got to attach to the torque converter instead of a clutch

So, this morning was about splitting the block. Here's a pic of the HG, you can see the failure on the left hand side

Started by removing rest of the bolt on bits. Found this bolt under the water crossover pipe, it seems to be the one missing from the cam cover.

Went to remove the thermostat housing and found a mismatch of bolts

and no thermostat?!

This piston was opposite no.3, I guess it had a bashing as the conrod flew around. 3 of the 4 pistons have been damaged.

Bore of no.3, the block and sleeve are damaged, along with the sleveve of no.1

Spot the differance!

and a close up of the damage

So I think Simon can now officially be called "the block slayer" .

Joking aside, at least we can start working to get you back on the road.

Rich, I think Simon had some overheating problems prior to the "big bang", so that may account for the missing thermostat and odd bolts?

Simon, I'd be thinking of getting a known good engine and dropping it in there mate. No running in period and straight to Bob for a map.

Bloody hell Rich - thanks for your work so far - I took the thermostat out when it started to overheat, it ran cooler without it....at the time it only had one bolt in it so I found one that tightened up the housing.................a lower temp thermostat is sitting here ready to go in.

I remember you mentioning about the bolt, just posting up what I find. We'll have a chat at some point and see where you want to go. Off to clean up and put all my tools away, it's amazes me how far they spread when you get stuck into a job!!

I appreciate that but never pointed fingers at anyone - the work was well documented and posted at the time by me and the builder................so I believe it's common knowledge anyway.

It seems without doubt that the previous builder didn't know what he was doing 100%,as my old man would say 'knows enough to be dangerous'!

Very careless workmanship

Potentially Simon the belt could jump a tooth on the timing and lead to god knows what kind of problems and issues.
