Cheers Lee - Wish we had X-ray vision, to get a good look inside, as you said the only way to truly know, is to split it up however sad that may be
I hope you are well and work is going great too

why would you not put a magnetic sump plug back in as you only need to wipe and clean it im sure you could have got all the debris off [/QUOTE]
Piece of mind to be honest Lee. Why would you put something like that back in for the sake of a couple of quid that could potentially cost thousands.
Doesn't make sense to me but that's just me. I take it would have done it then.

im sure it would have cleaned up fine and you could have got all the bits off it but some can be different in shape and some harder to clean off than others
work is great simon and just almost finished building a jaguar E-type V12 and half way through building up a evo 5 all from a fresh painted shell once these two are done and out then I start on a nice classic RS 2000 stripping it down ready for full body restore

Keeping my fingers crossed for you Si. Hopefully it'll be back on the road soon, getting sick of seeing it sitting on your drive every time I pass
I'm sure that Mr Edwards and his magic spanners will get it sorted.

Well after 10 months we finally get to see the cause of the failure on Si's engine. Had a constructive day today, and the weather holding off made things easier. This is how far I got with removing and stripping the engine.
Found a few things on the way, this was the turbo water inlet. The rust had come from the bottom of the expansion tank, not surprising as the car has been sitting for a year.
There was a puddle of oil on top of one of the heads, my guess is that this come from the breather system going to the catch can.
It also sprayed oil over the wiring loom connectors
There was a nut missing from the exhaust, I couldn't see any signs of it blowing.
There was another nut missing, this time from the inlet Manifold.
Found this loose and tucked under the manifold, not sure what it is so I will have to find out where it came from.
I then turned the engine on it's side to start working on the heads and noticed a rattle in the sump, so I took that off.
Found sealant stuck in the mesh on the oil pickup.
There were fragments of metal in the sump, also spotted this damage on the baffle.
More digging found this damage on the conrod
Next job was to remove the head. I didn't take any pics at this stage, I found the timing belt guide was missing. When I removed the head, I found cylinder 3 was full of rust, the valves were also rusty and it was clear that the head gasket had failed. I then removed piston 3 and found this.
I also removed the other head and it looks like one of the cylinders was running rich.
So thats it, tomorrow I will be splitting the shortblock for a better look and then it will be a wait until Wednesday to get advice and see if it salvagable.
