An Update ..............................
Thanks to Rich Edwards and Rich D for your efforts today
Here's the scoreboard:
Compression test done.
Cyl 1 - 120 psi
Cyl 2 - 120 psi
Cyl 3 - 0 yes ZERO.
Cyl 4 - 70.
Previous sniff test was negative, with no readings - but understand that these can be inconclusive.
No other symptoms re: HG failure.
Decisions, decisions

Sorry Simon that your engine is FUBAR'd but tbh I could have told you it was beyond help, as you said to me that the engine was rattling like loose bolts in a sweet tin.
Like I said it's a question of whether your engine block can be repaired or whether you need to source another crankcase.

Needed to get the Comp test done as a process sort of thing - I know it was / is making a very strange sound and is very unbalanced as you can imagine - but it's strangley nice to know what you are facing up against.
Valves maybe ????????????

Honestly when the heads come off there ain't going to be a piston left in cyl 3. When I explained what I heard to a couple of reputable subaru engine builders they said the same thing.

Valve or a valve seal is what Rich diagnosed on mine when I had low compression on cylinder 4 Si. But then I don't have any knocking or the engine sounding like a bag of old spanners I'm afraid

They end up in pieces and in the sump. Pretty much like your old engine but with out the hole in the block.
The banging is the rod flapping about, which pretty much rights off the block. Shame really as it was a closed deck one too.

Yep, still going strong six months after diagnosis and that's with daily use as well. Overfuelling naturally and the the only time I can feel the misfire is sometimes on cold idle and between 50 and 70mph in 5th. That engine is as strong as an ox and over a 160k on the clock
Having said all that, it probably go bang tomorrow

Hopefully you wont loose your patience or confidence in it and choose the right path that suits you.
Good luck with her,
Rob

I've dropped the oil now.....filtered it all through a fine filter and also the same treatment for the oil filter and contents itself.
No Water/Debris in the oil at all.............looks quite good actually and would be happy with it an oil change = not even black, but a dark golden colour - it's not that long been changed.
Sooo WTF is going on
Not sure of my next move Rich Mate

Hmmm???
Not sure then. Needs to be stripped to answer this one.
As for the sump plug it was full of debris and I didn't want to risk putting it back into a new engine. Would you??

Strange one eh ? Was just wondering if it was with you, as expected to see it earlier on, when I took the plug out - thought it may have attracted some gunk etc......if it looked ****ty for the build then no worries Mate.

I would like It very much if rich redwards were to strip it.
I can see already I have linch mob after me and by having rich strip it, he would be neutral and then I can't cover up any **** ups.(which by the way I am confident there won't be any)

No lynch mob at all - I'm just posting what I'm finding - sorry you feel like that Dylan, as I've always valued your input over the last year or so.
I know as much as you, about what's up with her at the moment. I've not pointed a single finger at anyone and wouldn't, as I'm not like that.
Also there has been no mention of any cover ups, or infrance to any future ones ? I'm sure you would be in the same boat if you were Me.
We are all concerned when our pride and joy goes South - and are all Mates at the end of the day.

why would you not put a magnetic sump plug back in as you only need to wipe and clean it im sure you could have got all the debris off
