but question is how quick is that? 5 minutes - 10 minutes or longer before it is safe (relatively speaking) to then give it the beans - I know on my 05 the Ecu holds back full boost until the engine is at operating temp as shown by the water gauge, so you could assume from that it's then safe or is just a compromise as at the end of the day you do kill your engine early well subaru aren't gonna be too bothered as that means they sell new engine or car

yes mate, funnily enough, 10 miles takes about 10 mins for me, driving at 60 at about 2500rpm in 6th gear. I don't think thats unreasonable at all

I tend to wait until the heater is at it's hottest before I really put my foot down. It's not an exact science but it's sufficiently enough time to warm the engine up.

So you are exactly 10 miles away from your house 10 mins after starting the engine in the morning?

For the record if I do drive my car cold I always give it 1 to 2 mins just to get oil circulating into the head before I roll. Then I try to stay below say 3 grand and off boost until warm.

On cranking & engine starting 1st time oil pressure is at 6.5-7 bar in a split second and that sender unit is located off of a remote T connector by alternator (original oil pressure sender position) so think you don't have to worry about waiting 2 mins for oil circulation, it appears to start circulate under cranking

It's not just the circulation it's the full coverage of all necessary surfaces with a film of oil I want.

If that all happens in a split second I'll be a Monkeys Uncle.

So no film of oil is left on any components it all drips back down to the sump
uhm well my engine must be broken then as components and when i remove the oil senders both of which are at top of engine, 1 by cylinder 3 the other by alternator are always coated with oil

Letting an engine tick over to warm is bad for your engine. At tick over the oil pressure is low so you don't get the oils hydrodynamic wedge between plain bearings, this can cause the shells to pick up and cause micro welds. Engines are designed to warm while they have air flow so you don't get hot spots. Most hand books state this.

I personally make sure it,s had a good run before giving it some hammer, making sure the brakes are good to stop too. I start the car and drive sensibly straight away, till the WATER GAUGE is to temp...i wouldn,t race the engine at this point, another few mins of driving first. We all have our own judgement of how to drive our own cars.
My mate bought a renault megane new and caned it from cold. It now rattles like **** when started up, it is 5 years old now though.

3 -> 4 miles at 30 mph sees 70 degrees oil temp. on mine...

Thrashing consists of taking it on to a rallycross circuit.

my scoobs only out at the weekend so takes about 10 mins for the oil temp to get to 80 then very rarely goes above 90

car is always driven off boost till at the right temp as giving it the beans when cold is just wrong

My warm up is enforced by the average speed cameras as I leave town at 5 in the morning. So about 5 miles at 50 then red line in every gear the remaining 23 miles, then a minute cooling whilst I put on my high viz etc in the car park. No thrashing on the way home as peak traffic.

Before the cameras went up last year I never bothered LOL.

Had the car 5 years and done 70,000 of the 160,000 on the clock. Not bad as most seem to give up around 130,000. Vauxhall 10w40 semi and pattern filter every 5000 miles.

MY97 always rattled like a pig when cold, sweet when warm Spare engine in the garage waiting for the inevitable LOL

You'd better turn it off when you are stopped in traffic or at light then.

The WRX is sooo diff prob a mile in drive it shows engine warm but im holding back 3 miles+ before even going 3,000rpm

How about you guys how long from cold start untill give it some beans?
I keep below 3k revs for the first 8-10 miles or 10 minutes depending on the journey.

Allowing the engine to tick over when first started every time is a bad idea given the car is on auto choke and putting more fuel through and can cause bore washing or fuel getting into the oil which ive seen on a couple of occasions with customers car's who do it!!
The oil dropped out literally stinks of petrol which for obvious reason's isn't healthy for the engine either.

I asked around those with oil temp gauges, and apparently it takes about 10-12 mins of "normal" driving for the oil to reach 80-90 dec celsius. Thats the rule i'm keeping to. Moderate throttle and below 3000rpm for the first 10 mins or so.

Always drive the car under 3.5k revs for around 10 mins before taking the revs over 3.5k...longer if the weather is cold/frosty. Absolutely vital for any performance car. Unfortunately in the Hawkeye STI type UK there's no oil temp gauge so I can only use time.
