Heres my collection, been into it since my dad got me a Tamiya Holiday Buggy when I was about 3 in the early 80's.
The Tamiya Porsche 959, Got this again as a child in the 80's when it was released, I completely destroyed it as a child but saw sense about 8 years ago and did a full restore - its basically a new car, only thing that wasnt replaced was the aerial mast and a few nuts and bolts. Its on a team Bluegroove repro body and decals, couldnt bring myself to risk painting the original body I got for it, if you hadnt guessed - this ones a shelf queen:
This is another one I picked up off eBay that im restoring as a runner as they are really good cars, very fast and handle well, the body came like that! Its an original though in near perfect condition so its going to get the DOT 4 brake fluid treatment and hopefully it will come good:
Another shelf queen, its a re-release, never been run:
Got this one for Christmas, re-release of the first car I owned:
Nice modded Kyosho Mini-z:
HPI Rally, had this a while now:
Another Tamiya work in progress, picked this up off here a few years back - the chassis it came with had wood screws holding it together?! So I managed to pick up a bare fully ballraced rolling chassis off eBay, I think I will try and get it up and running this summer:
Last but not least - The Ho Bao Hyper 7, excellent car and shifts!
My dad also has one of these and is currently doing a full restore on a 959, his collection puts mine to shame though!
Cheers,
Ayde.

Yep, think I paid £220 but with the VAT rise its now £229 at Modelsport:
http://www.modelsport.co.uk/hobao-hy...products/20870
At that price I would go for a new one, a lot of people replace the steering servo on them as the standard one just isnt strong enough, I ran mine in on the standard one on tarmac and then got an uprated Hi-tec servo, think it was only about £25 new.
You will also have to buy fuel and a glow starter (only a few quid) with it when you first get it but it comes with everything else. Ive changed/uprated a few things on mine such as the throttle linkage, locking wheel nuts as I had a wheel fly off once. I also rebuilt the diffs once run in with the recommended diff oils - helps handling a lot.
Another must have is a failsafe (about £10) - plugs into the reciever circuit and will cut the throttle if the reciever looses signal or low battery - handy to stop it disappearing into the distance!
I was looking at Kyosho Inferno's etc... but decided on the Ho Bao as they have cheap readily available parts, are easy to start and run and are supposed to be one of the most popular 1/8th cars in the UK.

I would pay the extra and go for that, you wont need a failsafe as its got the 2.4GHz gear and its got the bigger bore shocks.
Or pay a little more and get this:
http://www.modelsport.co.uk/hong-nor...products/33429
Or a little smaller and cheaper:
http://www.modelsport.co.uk/thunder-...products/34917
Im not looking anymore - im getting tempted!!!!!

Its the body and chassis that look fully intact and looks all original even the remote and charger from that time, all counts. After messing around with the 959's there is some real rubbish going for silly money out there lol!

The 959 is stunning - really nice car.
Ayde - Are you on Tamiyaclub?
Similar thing happening with the Optima. The one I bought was £35 and that was because the ebay seller spelt Optima wrong.
Theres some real junk on ebay selling for over £100+
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vintage-Kyosho...item35b10924e4
This is shagged but silly money!!
Best price I can find on a used Egress is £200 and even then it needs work. Admittedly my Optima Mid is going to end up being a bit pricey. The carbon bits weren't cheap

whats the difference between cars?
there seems to be some monster truck style, trucks body styles with chunky tyres, then sport buggy style with big wheels.
are they all the same?
some seem to do big jumps without breaking..... are they better to have then a car RC style?
this any good?

Yeah that's the original technigold, got all the tools that came with it too. They are pretty hard to get hold of now unless you want to pay silly money. Really good motors though considering they are a 25 year old design.

Worst bit for me was that I put my 959 up for sale or px in the paper when I was a kid and someone came round my house (a lot older) and I ended up swapping it for 2 smashed up, non working cars of his.
I had a few of the original Tamiyas.
My 1st car was the original Hotshot, then I had a 959, Hornet, lunchbox, thundershot and blackfoot.
A mate of mine had one I loved, was called The Wild One.

Wild One was my first RC car. We went to the local toy shop to buy a trainset and walked out with a Wild One. Its on my "to do" list but good ones don't really come up often.
I'm trying to do my resto projects slowly but its hard not to go mental with the Buy It Now button

Also need a new motor for my 1/8 rallycross buggy.
These are my current 'runners'
The manta ray is a fully modded example that eats batteries, the scoob is mildly modded on drift tyres and fitted with a helicopter giro for parking space fun
Scoob vid should be this

I know what you mean, I have been tempted to start on the other 959 but I want it to be a runner, it's gonna get an esc and a modern (cheap) motor. There's always that thought on eBay that it's the last one available and another won't come up its worth hunting around the net as some parts where common between different cars, on the 959 the speed control dust cover was going for about £8, I got some from time tunnel models - think it was also a Clod Buster part - £1.50! Centre prop and gearbox joints where about £18 from the states, got the parts from a place in Essex for about £6 as they had only listed them under the Toyota Celica Gr.B.

MMM are s/h technigolds rare or is it just bnib that are.-only asking as Ive about 2 or 3(used) that i'll never use and could put towards a freshen up of my manta ray(only really needs front suspension tower) .Used to be quite ballistic back in the day in 'car park' set up -pulled around 350w IIRC which equated to about 400 bhp/ton or thereaouts (would have to weigh the car again to be sure).
Also need a new motor for my 1/8 rallycross buggy.

The Technigolds are getting good money in used condition, they seem to have dried up lately too so it might be the right time to sell them 1 at a time think the last new one I saw that came up went for around £150, used where fetching anything from around £30 up.

what to pick outta these types?

http://www.xnitrorc.co.uk/~xnitrorc/14-nitro-off-road
I ditched the EB4 after one meeting. Ran a Kyosho 777SP2 for 2 years which was awesome and then an XB8 (I had the Xray tourer and the build quality is lovely) but I never felt as happy with the 8 as I did with the 777.
I seem to have developed a real soft spot for Kyosho stuff.
If you want a truck, I guess the Revo would be the one to go for but not keen on trucks. If its a buggy, the Hyper 7 bundles really are good VFM.
One thing to mention though - if you get Nitro, make sure you follow the run-in process. If you get 2nd hand, find out what fuel was used and if not, go through the run-in procedure again with the fuel you intend to use. Might be a bit OTT but should help engines last.
richieh - Your pencoed? Theres a couple of clubs in Cardiff I think - went to one track by the hospital once. I used to go to Swansea club (miss it loads)

My Optima needs lots of parts to get it just so but I'm watching an Egress right now which is bound to finish expensive. Do I get the Optima parts and wait for the next Egress or the other way around??!!
I've also committed myself to only being able to work on the car when theres an F1 race on so I'm trying to time when parts arrive from the states in order to have something to do during each race

The only one left I have now is an Auldey (rc car in a tin thing) RC Scoob
It's only a little thing but it shift for a small rc car. Got it off a group buy on here donkeys years ago, came over from HK with some mods on it like working headlights and upgraded motor. Problem is need somewhere dead flat to run it so can only use it on the kitchen floor which just isn't big enough for how fast it goes.
Used to have a Thunder Tiger classic scoob and then before that as a kid had a Tamiya Boomerang and Monster Beetle. Sold the Boomerang on ebay a while back as an absolute sh!tter (no radio gear or battery and in terrible condition) and got £35 for it when I was going to chuck it in the bin. Someone obviously wanted to restore it.

My first Nitro R/C was a Scoob rally car (Which I still have somewhere ). Great little car but I found I was really restricted on where I could run it due to it being quite low and having small wheels. It wouldn't run on grass and even most car parks will have stones which not generally noticable when you arrive in your own car but to a small R/C car travelling at speed can send it in to a catastophic tumble......I speak from experience!
Monster trucks are good for "Bashing" across rough ground but are susceptable to rolling at high speed due to the high CoG.
For me, this is where the Traxxas REVO came in (although the electric starter motor was tempting too No pulling a starter cord for me, just push the button ). It's a cross between a full monster truck and a buggy. The suspension can be adjusted so it's CoG isn't too high but still has big wheels so can belt across grass with no problems and generally small stones on carparks pose no problems either, but still has better cornering abilities than a full-on monster truck.
Think about where you are realistically going to run it and for me this was a big deciding factor on what type to go for. Remember the noise factor too! Most Nitro cars/buggies/trucks can be quite noisy and if you're running it close to residential areas you may get some angry residents after a while!
